It's being said that people are shocked. Why? Wasn't this a virtual certainty given the 'cancel culture' and the ability to buy weapons?

It's being reported that he shouted 'Fight, fight, fight' rather than fuck, fuck fuck. How true this is I do not know. But there a T Shirts on sale with a Fight, Fight, Fight! logo on them.

Republican gun control. The perfect oxymoron.

Personally I think it's a false flag operation as the shooter was a registered Republican. Also Donald knew it was coming as he is looking towards the shooter when the shots came and he so obviously had his response well rehearsed. You heard it here first folks!  ;D

well, the secret service dropped the ball. at the every least they should have had a guard on every rooftop within rifle range of the stage. how could you not do something so basic as that?

and apparently there were attendees pointing at the shooter and shouting to the cops for two or three minutes before he pulled the trigger. there will be some heads rolling.

i despise the secret service. this couldnt happen to a more deserving bunch of thugs.

Broadcast as shocking news from the USA here.
Doesn't surprise me, and I'm glad he's okay.
Gun crime in the UK is rare.
Walking along the street in LA twenty years ago I was smashed in the side of the head for no reason other than I happened to be there. Police weren't interested. At my hotel they said "Well, you look okay."
Didn't feel it. It would have been a serious assault anywhere else.

Will the evangelical right see his survival as divine intervention?

not so shocking by american standards.

i carry a gun as a matter of prudence. might not ever need it.

hope not anyway.

but if i do need it, i will be glad to have it on me.

But you are intelligent and thoughtful. What danger are you to others? It's the ignorant and selfish that are the issue.

here in america the no-gun people deny that reality. i am told constantly that i am a danger to civil society because i carry a weapon.

what can you do?

i had family members who are now dead because they could not defend themselves. i choose not to be one of them.

The shooter was a wimpy looking kid. He was, by virtue of his appearance alone, a prime prospect for being bullied.  In fact he had a history of having been abused by his peers. There is speculation that his father treated him badly as well.

Trump is a well demonstrated bully. His language alone is testament to that reality.  The kid, in desperation, decided to hit back in the most spectacular way that  he believed he could.

So there. I have psychoanalyzed the poor kid and made a perfectly plausible case in his defense.

Dark Lightning

^ Probably true. If he had been any kind of knowledgeable shooter, he'd have gone for center of mass. Probably no bystanders would have been killed or injured. Again, just speculation.

Asmodean

The guy did have the look of a "manlet who has preferred pronouns" about him, but generally, they are not the dangerous kind. Hmm... Perhaps he was only incidentally dangerous, having planned poorly, if at all, and been too emotional and/or incompetent to execute his plan well.

It may very well not have been an attempt at a political assassination as much as an "out of school school shooting," or suicide by Secret Service. Perhaps someday we shall learn. Perhaps not.

I don't see how your case, Icarus, is in his defence - he still made the choice to shoot people who posed no immediate threat to his life and was in turn killed for his trouble. It's a condemnation, if you think about it.

I had no intention of coming to his defense.  As I said, I was practicing psychoanalysis (without a license).

Recently I read a lengthy article about the way Norwegian kids are raised.  It would seem that danger of intimidation or bullying is not a common way of behaving in ordinary Norway  society. If that is true, then your society has achieved a monumental degree of success.

Being bullied by ones peers is devastating to ones sense of worth. The victims suffer physical abuse as well as emotional abuse. Over a period of time the victim comes to feel that living the role of the bullied, is not worth enduring. Some of the victims become angry beyond description. Then they may take the gas pipe or alternatively pick up an AR15

I'd say that would lean more towards understanding than defence, is my point. :smilenod:

Well, there is bullying and then there is bullying. Yes, a lot of kids get bullied. If you include shorter periods that sort-of "run out of steam" on their own, I'd say "everyone" got bullied as a kid. There is some political focus on how to stop it, but I think they often approach the implementation asswards. Good intentions and roads to Hell and what have you... Not always though. There are some good ideas out there.

For the survivors of school... It's not "everywhere," but there is certainly bullying in the work place, circles of acquaintances and so forth.

At my job, there is some focus on it, and it does happen. Nobody [same context: at my job] ever shot anybody over it as far as I know, however.

Mmh... Well. I think it has to do with what tools you have to deal with the issue. Some people do choose to off themselves because of bullying - some may even choose to kill someone else. I think around these parts, the "preferred" way of dealing with it for youngsters is to suffer through it until you don't ever have to see the bullies again. Having a circle of friends or at least not-indifferent peers can make a huge difference in the success of such an endeavor. When it comes to work... Yeah. There are offices and committees and all sorts of legal avenues available, though the much simpler option can often be to find a better workplace. In life in general - you just walk on your merry way.

Safety nets. Be they of a non-adversary circle of acquaintances, a relatively homogenous* and high-trust* society, a system where to fail utterly and forever, you actually have to put in some work yourself. Safety nets help, I think.

Gun control under the constitution would come from "thou shalt not kill" I take it, under that I assume it's open carry anywhere except private property and designated by the property owner.

not everywhere is open carry. but open carry is a stupid thing. it advertizes that youre armed and tempts people who are so inclined to sneak up and grab your gun.

i carry concealed because then i dont attract attention to myself or frighten people. the people who carry a visible gun are typically cosplaying some tough guy character.

not always, though. where i lived in arizona, open carry was routine, in town or in the country. people paid no more attention to a gun than they did as to whether you were wearing a hat. they tell me wyoming is the same way
