I wanted to bump this. :)

I recently saw The Help. I haven't read the book yet, but I really enjoyed seeing the movie and I'm looking forward to reading the book now!

I also just saw a movie that was released in 2010, called Sarah's Key. I saw it because I really enjoyed the book it was based on, written by Tatiana De Rosnay. The book was great, and although the film was changed in a couple ways, it made a big impact on me and I really think the events were portrayed well!

Any other newbies (or ole'bies, lol) see anything worth mentioning in the last while?

Faust is a 2011 Russian film directed by Alexander Sokurov. Set in the 19th century, it is a free interpretation of the Faust legend and its literary adaptations by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Thomas Mann. The dialogue is in German. The film won the Golden Lion at the 68th Venice International Film Festival.

a proper piece

The Skin I Live In (Spanish: La piel que habito) is a 2011 Spanish thriller film written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, starring Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, Jan Cornet, Roberto Álamo and Blanca Suárez, and is loosely based on Thierry Jonquet's novel Tarantula.

another proper piece, with banderas out of the slime and into serious acting again

-------------
animated with kids I liked Rio,  kung fu panda 2. Puss in boots hmm ok with me,  great for the kids- then again kids also "like" some vomit barbie princess and the like...
-----------------------------------
Sherlock holmes 2 disappointed me a bit, a good action movie but the Doyle character was more witty less rambo  and certainly no james bond. Nevertheless i enjoyed the movie, but not as much as the first one . In retrospect i would go see  proper Bond movie which I like for what it is.

I'll need to find this one and give it a watch, I just watched the youtube clip you left us and read a couple write-ups, it looks really interesting... although as you said, it also looks like it could be hard to watch at times. I really like British movies, they're often so 'out of the box' different than the typical American Hollywood stuff, and a lot of them I've seen really make you think.

It is really good and highly recommend it if you can find it. Also check out 'Dead Mans Shoes', ' A Room for Romeo Brass', 'Four Lions', 'In Bruges', 'Nil by Mouth' and 'Shallow Grave'. There are loads more but can't think of them just right now. I'm not a big fan of the typical Hollywood stuff but there are loads of fantastic American films.

Shallow Grave is one of my favorites. Saw the American Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo, and it was great. I liked it better than the Scandinavian one, even, which was also really good. Also saw Contraband, which was a solid action film.

Melmoth

Taxidermia kept me entertained. It's delightfully and needlessly grotesque from beginning to end. Somewhat disappointing though after reading all the hype online about it being the "most disgusting film ever made omg!" etc. Not even close, my pretties, though it's disgusting enough to still be good.

Red Road and Naked are two great ones, too, if you haven't already seen them.

Geoffrey Rush was awarded Australian of the year on Jan 26.
It did make me happy to hear it.

QuoteAUSTRALIAN of the Year Geoffrey Rush wants to use the arts to eradicate hysteria in the asylum seeker debate.

The acclaimed actor and creative mentor was speaking after being given the honour in Canberra last night.

And while he did not believe the award gave him sudden "licence to pontificate on everything and anything", he said the arts should be used to shape public debate on matters of national significance.

"Climate change, gay marriage, there's a role for arts to play in that," he said.
