Trying to decide whether or not it's worth it to take an online class from Oxford in Philosophy of Mind, or Epistemology. Or both. Or Neither. There's also Philosohpy of Science...Not that expensive, but no actual lectures. Just guided (via textual instructions and notes) readings and interaction with the 'tutor' and other students via a class forum.

I'm a student with the Open University. It's almost all off line and with hardly any tutorials, I get on with it quite well. I'm doing Maths and System design at the moment. I'm not sure how one would do a philosophy course via distance learning, surly it's a subject that requires a lot of interactive discussion between students?

Surely it is - I agree. It is certainly not my first choice, it certainly has its drawbacks.  I was trying to take exactly similar classes at a local "brick-and-mortar" university, but the enrollment for Fall was such that they stopped taking non-degree seeking students (sigh.  I was sooooo disappointed).  So that avenue closed.  This would be an alternative, something to indulge my interests for the present while I wait to apply for the spring 2011 term.

What's the pros and cons with the European Union. I never really got what it's all about.  

Cons:
- it is a huge bureaucracy
- it over extended itself by allowing countries to join that were not ready yet to join (like Greece, Portugal and the East European countries)
- it is a paradise for politicians. Old politicians don't die, they just become a member of the European Parliament.
- it has no common foreign policies.
- it barely has any legal rights.
- it is basically ruled by the French and Germans.
- all countries that joined are equal, but some countries are more equal than others   .

If a country would like to join the EU then I would give them the following advice:
- get the shrewdest politicians and lawyers to deal with the negotiations. In that case you can be sure that you get a much better deal when you join (like special privileges, farmer subsidies, taxes, etc.).
- don't give up your local currency.
- ignore all BS regulations and laws coming from the EU. You have a 100% chance that you can get away with it.
- make sure that your citizens are well represented in all EU institutions. These jobs there pay very well and they would barely have to do anything in return.

I'm continuously astounded at the rudeness of people who phone me up to ask for a service and then expect me to give said service with promptness and civility - even after they've just called me dim-witted.

I got a call from somebody claiming to be from my bank yesterday to answer a questionnaire, Ok no problem, having worked in marketing I know the value of customer feedback, so I said yes. The person then asked me if I would answer some security questions
