Quote from: "Pineapple"I got in trouble in my English class for presenting two charts that associated Religion by sects with IQ and the link between Religiosity and IQ. My teacher told me that it could be offensive to some people in the class, as we live in an area that has a high density of Baptists (who were one of the lowest ranked sects). I however, found it amusing and being an arrogant, cheeky, and audacious son of a bitch, I decided to show the charts off in my presentation anyway: shit hit the fan. People went crazy asking for questions and sources! A few people yelled, some cheered, my teacher shook her head in shame.
Sure, I'm getting evil glares of death now, but it was totally worth it.  lol
I got highfives from all the people that weren't Christian or Muslim! A whole four people out of thirty-two!

Hmmm on another note, I've noticed that when I type on a keyboard I move my hands similarly to how pianists move their hands while playing. Perhaps I should take up Piano.

Awesome.  Just pure awesomeness.

I found a group on Facebook that's for Atheists in N. Ireland.
I am ridiculously pleased at this discovery, 'cause I felt pretty lonely for a while.

It was an okay morning.  I decided on playing a little online poker so I started in a $1 rebuy tourney which I got knocked out of early off facing pocket Jacks then Aces back to back.  So to vent a little frustration I signed up for a 4 player sit n go, heads up shootout.  Thats the one where you play heads up until one of you is left and its winner take all.  My first match was quick 3 hands where I got great cards and stole a little money.  On the 3rd and final hand I had pocket 5's he limped from the button and I took the free flop.  KT9 2 hearts was the flop.  Well I checked and he bet the pot (60 since we just limped) and I decided to see if he had a hand and was going to try and take him off of it.  Turn card came a 5 and plans changed a little.  I checked my set and he bet the pot, I decided at that time he had either 2nd pair or top pair weak kicker either way I figured he'd stick around.  I check raised him for half of his remaining stack.  He called.  River paired 9's so I had a full house and I just open shoved.  He called and I busted him.

I had to wait about 40 minutes for the final round to start.  When it did we just kept shuffling back and forth chips.  I managed to get a slight lead when the most awesome thing happened:

I was on the button with KQos and made a standard raise to 180.  He quickly re-raised me to 360 and I called because heads up thats what you do.  Flop came AKJ all diamonds and I had the Q of diamonds in my hand.  He made a pot sized bet and I decided he had an Ace.  It makes sense to bet the ace which is probably good on that board and to deny me odds to draw out.  Slight problem though.  I had 17 outs assuming he doesn't have 2 pair.  Which makes me a solid favorite.  I shove and he quickly calls.  He flips over A7 with no diamonds so I have all 17 outs.  Turn card is a 3 of clubs no help so i'm down to about a 40% chance of winning.  River was the T of diamonds giving me the Royal Flush... 2nd ever.

And this time I have proof: http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt169/LoneMateria/Royal.png  I took a screen shot of the play back.

^ I saw that video on Think Atheist last night. I loved it! Patton Oswalt was spot on--I hate that song.

Anyhoo...on my mind today is a small matter. My mom wants to take the family out to a church Christmas musical tomorrow night. The name of the play is "The Gospel According to Scrooge" and I'm not entirely sure I want to endure another religiously-themed Christmas show. I went to the one last year and it was nice to spend time with my parents and all, but I feel conflicted. Blah.

Well, now, that's a dangerously open ended question, isn't it?

I work nights (one of the reasons for my net name), but I'm off tonight.  But I'm up at this ungodly hour, which is pretty appropriate, I suppose... On my mind?  How to get my recalcitrant fingers to stop with the typos already, what to name my band's new album if it comes down to me, and how to cheer up our drummer, who has been chewed out by the principle of the middle school where he teaches band for the umteenth time this year.

I've renamed one song from "These Two Hands" to "Shooting Star," so I suppose that is a candidate.  Or Clockwork.  Or Spin Games.  Any opinions here?  Which title would make you take a closer look and even listen to a sample track or two?  Breeze of Springtime?  Tennessee Woman?

One of the things I like about the atheists on any forum where they post is that they generally write well, even on the fly,  Most people don't.  It's not just typos, misspellings, or punctuation errors.  They are inconsequential editing problems that wouldn't appear if this weren't a first draft medium.  My own writing has them from time to time.  But so few internet writers structure their sentences and paragraphs well, and that makes even the occasional interesting thought both hard to find and hard to follow.

I try to get to sleep a bit earlier on my nights off, and I feel the first drowsies coming on. ' Night, all.

This winds up being a bit of a work rant, but hopefully an entertaining one. I work for a city library and we're in the process of switching to a new-fangled system to replace our seriously ancient text-based telnet stuff. Eventually the whole province will be connected to us (and we to them) so patrons can request books and music from anywhere and get them shipped over. But I think that's a long time coming. Right now we have to figure out how to get the program functional for our city borrowers.

It's been a nightmare. Training has been haphazard and off the cuff and even today my supervisor was literally applauding the tenacity of workers at all the branches for their grassroots problem solving abilities. I could have fallen off my chair. Not because I never expected him to be impressed over anything, but for him to be thinking local solutions are the best thing ever.

Local solutions are all we've got. Nobody from anywhere actually using this system came around to train us in its use. A few supervisors and librarians got a bit of training to pass along to the rest of us but I had to figure out my whole role in the process pretty much on my own. The training manual is not designed for the first time users of this program, that's for damn sure. It's more for the people who are already familiar with database management and need tips on setting it up and running projects behind the scenes, not the day to day use for cataloging and public patron borrowing. It's all been hands on learning for all us peons.

I would have preferred having someone come in who knew how the thing worked to be with us to troubleshoot, rather than leave us all floundering in the unfamiliar realm that is this new Millennium.

GAH!

That's where my head's been all day. GAH! GAHH!  At least I have a Freethinker's pub night to look forward to this evening. Make all my problems fade for a night...

I feel like I've been neglecting HAF. I started a Ph.D in Instructional Technology and it's keeping me pretty busy. Also, since I'm done with my Master's that focused on religion, I don't "go off" as much as I used to (out of sight, out of mind, I guess).

Sorry.  :verysad:

Mom emailed me this morning to tell me about a snow storm forecasted to hit the East coast tomorrow which may affect her trip from PA to AZ tomorrow.   This is why I don't fly East for the holidays.

I'm cold and cold hurts.  Fibromyalgia/lupus don't mix well with cold.  I need to move somewhere warm where there are jobs.  My partner is looking for work in North Carolina.

Last night I got to make up a big batch of fake blood and make my partner progressively gorier for a music video.  I started with a little blob of blood on his chest and spread it out as the song progressed until it was a messy but roughly heart-shaped (stylized heart, not a real heart, I didn't think people would get the imagery) area of blood that almost entirely covered his chest.  I didn't realize how rotten cold weather has been for me until I went to crouch under the camera to shove him out a door (to do a POV) shot and simply wasn't able.  We adjusted by raising the camera (he's two inches shorter than I am, making the logistics even more difficult) and tweaking the angle a bit.  It looks OK shot that way but I was horrified to discover that I'd suddenly become very un-bendy.  A hot shower brought the bendiness back but, dang, it was weird and unpleasant.
