I don't think that one is visible in the UK.  I still remember the total eclipse we had here in 1999 though, well worth seeing one if you have the chance.

I am, we're seeing 62% of it here.  I'm hoping to get a spot out on the beach for viewing.  And I'll probably watch the broadcast of it on PBS as well (esp. if I forget to buy the eclipse glasses).

Ahh yes the old welding trade. You think that's really a good idea?

I've always used my welding mask to look at the sun.  It seems to give roughly the right brightness and it certainly cuts out the UV.

EDIT: That is, a mask designed for arc-welding.  Goggles for gas welding will not do.

Safe methid for observing the Sun is to view its reflection in a bowl of water. You have to do your best to keep the water ripple free.

Have not tried it ('cos my big camera can usually stop down enough) but that might be a way of getting safe photos as well.
