National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins is "stunned" by the federal district judge's decision to deny federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research, and the Justice Department plans to appeal the ruling.

Pure stupidity, to do this to one of the most promising areas of research in medicine.

I'm happy that Collins isn't letting his theism interrupt his thinking.

The thing that pisses me off is that the whole origin of the argument against using embryonic stem cells is basically religion interfering with science.

This annoys me, with all the medical advances that could be made in this field, they're just going to deny it?  

Sometimes, it's hard to not be prejudiced against religion.

Excellent news! For the UK. A lot of American researchers work in the UK because of the more sensible and pragmatic regulations here. Keep the money flowing our way

When I think of the problems with religion, impeding science is a major point.
Stem cell research is an obvious example.
It's not hard to imagine that people will die prematurely or suffer because of religiously motivated interference.
As someone who doesn't have the consolation of an after life I find this interference outrageous.
It's like a swimmer being pulled down by a drowning man.

These religious know nothing seem to forget that the world is much larger than the US. The research isn't going to stop, the US will just be behind in yet another field of science. Another excuse to move to the UK.

Isn't it ironic that some Americans who live, for the most part, in 'The land of the free' consider leaving and possibly returning to the country their ancestors left to find that very same freedom. For me the science denial of a vocal minority of Americans is the most disturbing aspect of Christian religious fundamentalism. For this to have developed in the country that flew to the moon is quite dispiriting.

I am always disappointed to see honest scientists being deprived of the, easily available, resources to further legitimate study.

I think there will be plenty of private funds to have though... However, I would like the governments who fail to fund stem cell research not to whine about the treatment prices when it's time to reap the fruits - or about the lack of availability.

It is,  it's incredibly ironic. It's saddening too because I do love my country very much but it's looking more like a lost cause because of these religious idiots. England isn't perfect but as of right now it looks more American than America itself which says a lot.
