The weakest part of a security system is usually the people. One way Bletchley Park was assisted in breaking the Enigma code machine was lazy operators reusing encryption key words which they were strictly forbidden from doing.

Indeed. The "Ah, it'll prolly work out" mentality is strong with them humans - even some humans who do or at least should know better.

Unless there is an immediate, tangible reason to do things the proper, "hard" way, people will at best grumble while doing it - at worst, not even pretend like they do it. In my experience, even being burned is a temporary fix at best. Given enough time, complacency sets in again.

We humans are a flawed species.

If people are flawed then they must search for the flaw. But, if the search is under flawed thinking then the flaw won't be found. Therefore the the finder, if ever, must be born knowing the solution to the flaw.
The only thing possible the world needs saving from are the ones running it.

Alas Old Seer, most of we humans are unaware that we are flawed.

(not you or me or our HAF participants of course. We do know or at least suspect, superbly talented and wise that we are; we may not be infallible)

"Born knowing"?

That looks exactly like woo, but then it's not a surprise. More of the wisdom of the Smurfs?

My investment guy called to talk with us. In the course of the conversation I asked if we had any Tesla stock. We don't. I don't know which way to jump on that stock, as it is down 25%. It may drop further, or Tesla could tank. His insane behavior in that non-elected position turned me off from his products. I trust my guy's call. We're up 1% while the rest of the market is down.

I predict there will be no messiah arriving via physical means to fix the flaw. I have no confidence in civilization lasting for very much longer. :)

You didn't take that as an actual truthful statement did you???? It was an expression of the futility of the problem.

One never knows. The wisdom of the Smurfs has astounded me before. Serious head up the arse stuff.

Regarding "off topic," I've merged the political discussion in the Politics board. You will find all relevant posts in your thread, should you choose to respond.

Reminds me of the "just kidding" defense. A /sarcasm with that post would have gone a long way towards dispelling the issue.

Nah. One might half-heartedly do it for a week or two after having been sufficiently burned, but generally in an attempt to externalise as much responsibility as possible.

QuoteBut, if the search is under flawed thinking then the flaw won't be found. Therefore the the finder, if ever, must be born knowing the solution to the flaw.
You find the flaw... Then declare yourself weak and resume business as usual. :smilenod:

Where, when did I find the flaw and present it for analysis. What did I say the flaw is. :)

Nono, that one is a road map for when you find one. "There be black, toxic-looking smoke coming out of that roof over yonder. How unusual... Someone must be having a barbeque." :smilenod:

Just because there be a flaw, it's human enough to just... Meh. A problem ignored is a problem avoided. :smilenod:
