Notes from a conversation...

I had a conversation with some other moms from my son's school the other day... the conversation took an uncharacteristic turn toward religion and politics.  I tried to stay out of it... honestly, I know where they all stand, all 5 of them, and we are at opposite ends of the spectrum on all counts.  I consider them my friends because our kids all go to the same school and it's to my benefit and theirs if we all just keep our conversations and dealing to kid-related issues.

Anyway, here are some of the things they had to say when the topic of the California Prop 8 issue was brought up by one of the moms who previously resided in California:

Mom A:  In the 6000 years since God created the world and religion, why have gays never wanted to marry or why hasn't God let them marry?

Me:  You know that homosexuality exists in nature and the animal kingdom [she shook her head].  And until recently, gays were AFRAID to ask for their equal rights for fear of being ostracized or killed.  And God won't let them get married because his followers stand up for Him.

Mom B:  Gays marrying makes my marriage seem less valid because marriage is sacred, given to us by God... one man and one woman!

Me:  That's irrelevant... and how could what two other people do together make your marriage any less valid?  You're still married in the eyes of the court and God and your church.  Letting them marry has NOTHING to do with that.

Mom C:  Think of all of the money that will be wasted because they'll have to change the dictionaries and school textbooks to say that marriage is for everyone!  [seriously... she SAID that!]

Me:  I don't think reprinting dictionaries will be a priority...

My OWN mother, later that day:  Why can't they just keep living together?  Why do they need to get married?

Me:  The same reason YOU got married, Mom... because they love each other and they deserve to have that recognized legally, just like you did and just like I did.

It's when I have these types of conversations that I am truly TRULY embarrassed to be an American.

"6000 years since got created the earth AND RELIGION"????

"Change the dictionaries"?!?!  :brick:

Lord, save me from your minions.

The "Marriage less valid"-crap was pulled by our xians too when the law was still being discussed. However, they were voted down like nobody's business and now homosexuals and heterosexuals have equal rights when it comes to marriage. Next step is making it easier for them to adopt kids.

Luckily, we don't hear that "6000 years since god this and that" BS. I think the vast majority of people here are quite content with the Earth being 4-5 billion years old.

Even though that's the kind of culture I grew up in, it still amazes me when people say things like "the world is 6000 years old" and "gay marriage makes marriage less valid." Their ignorance astounds me. Makes me wanna smack some heads.

Tell me about it! I almost bought a warhammer the other day. The guy said it was "particularly good for bashing ignorance out of people's brains and bashing people's brains out of their ears"
