Don't have a gun or know how to use one.  Can't box, am a nerd.  I have four friends, but don't know if any of them can fight.

Out of luck I guess.
Yes. Stay away from fighting - safer that way.

I always took the advice to mean fight in the loosest sense of the word. From small disagreements to fist fights, or as Asmo put it 'absolute superiority', be always in a position to end a "fight" should someone be unwise enough to start one. most time that does not require fisticuffs.
As I see it, when not phrased as a metaphor, a fight is a fight. Yelling on top of your lungs at one another is a verbal disagreement. The two are not synonimous.

Here are some of my favourites from The Lord Of The Rings.  I'm not sure if I've posted them on HAF before, but they should be in this thread anyway.

"Advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill."

"The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot forever fence it out."

"Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear."

Life is like a stroll in the rain, you can either duck for cover or you can get wet.

"Better by far that you should forget and smile than that you should remember and be sad."  I think that's from a love poem by Christina Rossetti, in any case it's always stayed with me as very practical advice in general, tho I've rarely been able to put it to use.

I got this just this morning from a religious friend:

* If we plant honesty, we will reap trust
* If we plant goodness, we will reap friends
* If we plant humility, we will reap greatness
* If we plant perseverance, we will reap contentment
* If we plant consideration, we will reap perspective
* If we plant hard work, we will reap success
* If we plant forgiveness, we will reap reconciliation

So, we must be careful what we plant now; it will determine what we will reap later.

Can't say I agree with all of it, but I think it's generally sound.  And it goes with something else my Dad used to tell me: The ending of all things can be seen in their beginning, so always start as you mean to finish.
Sandy

"Life is short, and it is up to you to make it sweet."  Sarah Louise Delany

Ali

"The way you do anything is the way you do everything."  Not sure who said it, but I think it's very true.

I thought an old farmhand like you would appreciate that.  :P

I do agree though about it being a bit simplistic, there's usually too much or not enough rain, if you have a good crop the price will be crap, and aliens are always vandalising crops.

Quote
* If we plant honesty, we will reap lies in return
* If we plant goodness, we will reap being used
* If we plant humility, we will reap being the underdog
* If we plant perseverance, we will reap a blue eye
* If we plant consideration, we will reap indifference
* If we plant hard work, we will reap low yield
* If we plant forgiveness, we will reap being crossed

Just as simplistic, but I think I have demonstrated the flipside of that one-dimentional coin, yes?

It's feel-good, but the Pudding is right. You can plant all you want, but you also have to take measures to keep stampeding herds and locusts off your plantations.

Don't start fights, but be ready to finish them.

In the words of my Combat Hapkido instructor
"Your wallet is not worth your life."
"Whether it's a peaceful or violent resolution to the confrontation, you always want to be the one resolving it."
"There's no shame in running."
"A 'fair fight' does not exist, being the one to walk away is the only thing that really matters."
"Where one hit is good, a few dozen is excellent."
"I would never condone taking a life, it's a terrible and tragic thing, but if it's your life or theirs, do NOT hesitate, or the choice will be made for you."

In the words of my Computer repair teacher
"Don't sell yourself short." Simple, but it really gave me things to think about.
"Success is 100% hard work, but it's also 10% luck."

A very cynical one from Thomas Mann:

The one who loves the most is at a disadvantage and has to suffer.

There is some hard won wisdom behind that and a truth I can attest to.
