You may have seen this viral video floating around the web about stopping the African war lord Joseph Kony. However many people aren't aware of the organization behind the video, here is the segment from 10 O'Clock Live by Charlie Brooker highlighting what the aim of the Christian fundamentalist group are actually trying to achieve.

Nice video.

Wil Wheaton wrote a pretty good accessible of the whole "Invisible Children" organization on his blog. The morale of the story is: do some research before you give people money or rally behind an organization.
"We've thought of life by analogy with a journey, with pilgrimage which had a serious purpose at the end, and the THING was to get to that end; success, or whatever it is, or maybe heaven after you're dead. But, we missed the point the whole way along; It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing, or dance, while the music was being played.

my husband told me yesterday that the dad from the video just got arrested for public masturbation.

I just read this article and there's so much WTF, I don't even know. Apparently he doesn't have a drug/drinking/or mental health problem, but everyone's supposed to believe he got naked and crazy in public from "exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition."

I've stopped caring about the crazy shit most celebrities do, but if you're heading up a huge "aid" organization, I don't even know, man.

LOL yeah, apparently about 30% of the charity money goes to actual charity work, a little fact that most people who donated didn't know so...

Their YouTube channel is here. Check out some of their videos, but be prepared to, as Charlie Brooker said, have a few WTF?! moments.

I'm not able to watch the video right now and have not been following this very closely. Could someone briefly summarize what was in the video Crow posted.

Does the video claim Kony isn't as bad as the video made him appear, or simply that the maker of the video had alternative motives?

Thanks in advance.

Basically that KONY 2012 is campaigning for and promoting KONY 2012, or the foundation, more than actually trying to raise awareness towards the situation in Uganda, which is a bit outdated it seems. It isn't even clear if Kony is even in Uganda now or has been for the past few years.

Charlie Brooker (who I think is hilarious btw) also mentions the groups other "awareness raising" videos, such as expensively produced music videos featuring the guy who got arrested (co-founder of the group) and one very odd The Fourth Estate which looks like a weird cult recruitment video. ??? It doesn't mention Christianity though, but the co founder himself mentioned that the best way to avoid scaring people off is not to mention overtly that you're for a rather radical Christian cause (also talked about and clip shown in Charlie Brooker's video).

Here's an article with an Ugandan journalist: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-12/ugandans-hit-back-at-kony-2012-campaign/3883922 calling the interventionalist campaign simplistic and innacurate.

While Kony hasn't been very active in Uganda lately, his Lord's Resistance Army has been linked to quite a few actions in the region, notably in Sudan and the Kongo. So just because he isn't in Uganda right now he is still a major player in the violence in the region. He remains a bad guy, and needs stopping.

As for Charlie Brooker and his people, I am sceptical of them and their motives. And the video is simplistic but no less true for that.
You can't argue that this awareness raising campaign isn't a decent idea, even if the motives are shady.

It's better than nothing if it does lead to Kony being captured (he still has to answer for what he did, even if it was years ago and Uganda is now entering a post-war construction phase. One problem I find is that he (the co founder) is also advocating for US military intervention, which IMO should be a big no no at this point. Why does KONY 2012 focus on Uganda when Kony hasn't been there for 6 years?

I guess just know that if you want to donate, only about 30% of your money will actually go to help in that construction phase, the rest goes to the KONY 2012 foundation.
