After reading this, I think I might use "you" too often. I also use it to mean 'general people', not really aimed at a specific someone in particular.

Yeah, I think when he explained it meant general people, that was clear enough. I try to watch the word 'you' in my own speech though, because when I'm talking to a group of people, I don't want someone to take something personally if I mean it generally to involve people rather than that one person... and if I DO want to speak to one person, I don't necessarily want them to think I mean everyone, either. Mostly though, I don't want anyone thinking I mean them, but not me too.

For example, "I think you have to be careful not to be a jerk while talking to others" could cause an entire group of people to say 'yeah, all of us should take care not to be jerks online', but someone may say 'huh?? I wasn't a jerk!'... and someone else may say 'worry about yourself being a jerk, don't tell ME what to do!' when I didn't intend that at all... then the fight starts.  :P

That's one way of doing it I suppose.
Using the plural  of you, yooz and the singular ya is another way.  ;)

Using the general "you" leaves more room for the general me to answer from a personal perspective.  :D

I don't see the need to create entire threads for that purpose. If you have some clear reason, please explain, so it doesn't appear that you're just picking a fight.

Thank you.
The purpose for the thread was to get the three questions in my OP answered, I don't see how that was not very clear. I had no intention of picking a fight or starting an argument (as I had already stated), it's just that a response from AD contained almost every sentence with these odd things and I wanted to know what purpose they have because it was not very clear.

You're welcome.

I use "you" a lot too in the generic sense and frankly I assume that's how others are using it unless the context is obviously personal.

*you seems as good a way as any to notate that you mean "general you" instead of "specific you".  Or we could use gyou and syou.   :D

I still don't see the purpose in doing this and am cautioning you against starting threads for the purpose of picking fights, picking nits, or to simply start an argument, which it stills seems to me is the main purpose behind what you've done here.

If you were unclear on something that was posted, ask for clarification in that thread, or post a PM to the person you are questioning.

I don't see how it's my fault you can't see the very basic and open purpose of getting my three questions answered. You seem to imagining more into the purpose that what I had intended, how do I correct your baseless assumptions?

I tried to do so, but AnimatedDirt was not answering and it was taking that thread off topic. Are you suggesting that I take threads off topic?

How do I determine if a thread is needed? Do you have any kind of criteria for me to follow to determine such? Are you the arbiter of what makes a thread needless?

I'm asking these questions, because I will follow the protocol that you lay out here, so long as it makes sense. So far what you're saying doesn't make any sense, unless you're requiring me to PM you my thread topics and OPs so that you can determine if they are needed or not, which sounds very unreasonable. And also sounds like a very subjective criteria: I don't think that what music one is listening to is needed, but you didn't tell them not to start an entire, needless thread.

Actually, a thread on how someone uses a specific word may be helpful to a bunch of different people: people whose first language isn't English, people with aspergers/other disorders that cause one to see sentences in a VERY literal way... those, at least, come to mind. Maybe it was just specifically the calling out of AD publically that was the issue, not the 'let's talk about how some people use this word'?  ??? Just guessing.

Aye, I have aspergers, which is why I ask for clarification of usages, especially uncommon things. I already replied to statichaos that I could see a similar point to what you make here and I also reclarified that I was only asking for clarification. It was only directed at AnimatedDirt because he was the only one I had seen using it, but now I can see that other people can easily assume that I was calling him out instead of my intended purpose of asking him for clarification (and having that be provided to more than just me), of the usage without continuing to derail a topic.

Davin, I've already explained this in the quotes above. It now seems that you simply want to cause a problem here by arguing with me about this thread. I said you should have sent AD a PM on this rather than start a whole thread, calling him out on something as nit picky as his use of the word "you", which no one else seems to have a problem with.

This is as far as I'm going to explain it to you. And yes, the other moderators and admins and I are the ones who make decisions of what is and isn't useful on the forum. If you don't like it, then take it up with me or another moderator via PM, but do not continue this.
