I didn't see a topic about this in here yet, so I guees I ought to do it.

In a nut shell, this new bill, SOPA/PIPA would basicly would basicly put an end to places like YouTube, Facebook etc, just for one link that would lead to copyrighted material. Sites like those would either have to cencor their users, or be suead by copyright holdrs, namely corporations.
Just follow this link to get more info and scroll down for a video and articles about this new shinanigans:

So if you can, would you be so kind and kick some idiot politician ass so that this bill doesn't pass, please? Thank you  :)

Edit: Also, you can sign a petiton even if your not living in US....

I heard that these fucking morons want to give American Law Enforcement Agencies the right to shutdown foreign websites. Who do they think they are? Almighty God?

Practically, how would they shut down a site that has no servers nor service providers in the US? The best they could hope for is negating the US based public access to it, no?

They should not be able to physically shutdown the foreign site itself, but block the access to it by cutting off DNS access at the ISP level.

Not an expert on DNS structure, but that would still be sort of area-limited, no?

They'd have to force every internet service provider in the US to block the site....which they could do if it were made illegal to go to certain sites.

What's the purpose of this bill anyway?  To block viewing terrorist sites?

You know, if this actually passes (and assuming I understand what it is...still a bit confused how what I think it is could be constitutional) I wonder how long till atheist sites got on the list for being godless and therefore anti-american....

From what I've understood the point of this bill is to get rid of internet piracy, but at it's current wording it would give the copyright holders and even the goverment an unlimited power to block or shut down internet sites that have even a hint of copyrighted or "wrong kind" of posts or even a link to a site that is considered as a a pirate site. For example almost all free torrent sites would be shut down without mercy, suh as Pirate Bay, and anyone who has a link to that site.

Apparently this bill was first introduced in June or July this year, and the reception was less then enthusiastic....

Aside from copyright problems that the music, film, and gaming industry have I think it is also to help news outlets get some control back over there content, they could register their articles and any blog that republishes the news without consent can be easily threatened with legal action.

I wonder what impact this would have on replys to political propoganda like Rick Perry's 'Strong' advert? If it allowed suppression of comment it would be 100% against the ideals of free speech. I can't see Americans putting up with that. It would start a second revolution.

That would be fun to watch. edit: as long as nobody got killed because of it.

Yes. It should be limited to the USA, but to be honest I have zero trust in the execution of the law. Those American "copyright law" enforcement agencies (Gestapo Mk-II  ;)) are bound to screw up, like they've done so often in the past.

Anyway, it is kind of ironic that the USA always criticized China for censoring the internet, but now follow in their leads.

And very strange that the Party Of Small Government (republicans) would support such a broad reaching bill.

But then again, reps are hipocrites...

Yeah well, from what I understand most republicans seem to try and play somekind of a "safe card" by almost mimicking a certain Junior....

But, apparently there's alos those who oppose it, like Ron Paul....we'll see what becomes of this guy, though I have been hearing ok comments from a lot of people, but that's more to the politcs section... ::)

But apparently they didn't vote the bill in yet, and experts are going to have a say, or have i misunderstood something...?
