It's good that you reminded me about that. In fact, I was blaming myself the whole time she was confined in the hospital.

Oh, my daughter's home now and doing fine. I was just whining (lame) and blaming myself for my kid's poor health in the past few days.

Well, today, I read a few blog posts at Daylight Atheism.  I thought about how to apply his series on how to think critically to my everyday life.

That I have worked now 21 days straight without a day off, all twelve hour days, without air conditioning in 100+ temperature, and I wonder how much longer I can hold out as there is no end in sight.

What do you do as a mining engineer?
What does an average day consist of?

Right now he's doing quality control.  Different tests on the product as it filters through the equipment at the plant to check whether or not they are in spec so that it can be sold.  Long boring tests in a little shack without fans or AC.  Oh, and I should add, the tests are 2 hour tests with an acid solution or crush tests depending on what spec he's looking for.  There are probably one or two more he's doing on occasion but off the top of my head... he's not home and awake long enough to actually tell me.

Usually, and I'm sure he'll correct this eventually as he's already hit the shower, has to be up again in 6 hours...
A mining engineer will run day to day operations of the plant, including quarry reserves and blasting, BS from employees if they are in a supervisory roll, BS from the machinery/equipment if they are in a maintenance roll, BS with quality if they are in a quality assurance roll.  There can also be the geological side of the plant where they would have to prove reserves, find where the good material is, depth, overburden to be removed, etc.

Of course this is just my oversimplified version of his job   Technically we are both ceramic engineers, he gravitated toward mining and I diverted to package engineering and project management in the 11/12 years since we escaped college.
