It should have come with the Vista CD....it's common practice for windows computers to come pre-installed with the operating system but have a copy of the OS install disk in with all the manuals and crap that comes with your computer.

If you made an exact copy of all the files, including all the hidden system files, then yeah windows would be part of it. There are programs for doing that kind of thing. See here. You could back up everything to the external HD (didn't know you had one), install the replacement HD in the laptop, partition and format it, restore the original files and then add a boot sector and it should work.

I understand what you are saying, but i'm not sure how to do it.  Besides if I were to put a blank HD in my computer It would have to install my external before I can use it.  I have no idea how to do that using DOS.

**EDIT** I have no idea if that would even install with DOS, I think its meant to be installed to Windows and MAC only >.<  I may be able to do it if I can install Linux but i'm very unfamiliar with the Linux environment.

It didn't.  I thought it was strange too that my laptop didn't come with a Vista CD.  However part of my hard drive was partitioned for a recovery section.  The Vista CD is really just that partitioned section of my hard drive.  Which means it useless to put on another hard drive.

Supposedly there is a way for me to create an image of my harddrive and use that image to install Vista on an empty hard drive with all my files intact.  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721929(WS.10).aspx  It looks like this feature was specifically added for IT professionals who distribute Vista.  I stumbled across this from reddit, apparently they built that on windows 7 and they said it would save everything you've installed and worked on.  If I can do this and put it on my External Hard Drive  then it looks like I will be fine.  What do you think of this?

Yeah if you're comfortable you can do all that and you can get hold of all the software (does it come with Vista?) then that's basically what I had in mind.

From what I can tell I can get this through free software from Microsoft.  I don't know if i'm comfortable doing it but thats an option for me.  I have Linux installed on this computer but I don't think it will copy it.  Something to do with Linux being able to pick up Windows but not the other way around.  Lol If I was more comfortable with Linux i'd just put it on a CD and install it with my new Hard drive

Windows is less hassle then Linux, except I end up reinstalling once a year or so when it slows down. Linux is better for servers and its free of course. Solaris is very similar to Linux these days. It has the same desktop as Ubuntu Linux and OpenSolaris is free. The latter two are harder to configure than Windows. Mac OS is fine but I don't use it as much and tend to get lost a lot.

So you are very knowledgeable about Linux then.  I have Ubuntu and it works except for one critical feature.  My buddy installed it on my computer and everything worked except my wireless card.  (Yes this is a laptop)  And I can't get it working.  Whenever I use Linux I have to run an Ethernet cord to my router.  Sorry to bother you for more tech support but do you have any ideas why this is like it?

Haha, on Linux that depends on which kind of wireless card you have. I would give up now if I were you. Getting wireless cards to work on Linux is excruciating. But basically, the process is to get the chipset and model number and search Google for "Linux wireless my chipset name". You won't find official instructions anywhere. But you'll find forums of other people all going through the pain of making wireless work in Linux. There you'll find the sequences of arcane text you have to put in a multitude of text files with incomprehensible names (which are in different places in every version of Linux). You'll do all that and it won't work. So then what you need to do is go back to these forums. You'll go crazy! I had to that when I installed Linux on my Xbox. Oh and if anyone tells you to recompile your kernel, better to kill yourself than attempt it.

I'm not joking, it really is that bad. There's a reason the Linux wireless driver is called "madwifi". It makes its users go mad!

I did my usual Facebook routine of looking through what other people posted, and I saw a good American friend post about Obama and his plan to end that 'Don't ask, Don't tell' thing in the military. I was happy, but I saw a comment of his telling a previous commenter to be careful. I looked at it, out of curiosity. It said this; "Dammit. They need to see Jesus' eternal light and salvation. I will be praying for them, and Obama as well." and said that they'd pray for my friend and that they were dead serious.

I'm too nice to say anything back to her but I...Ugh. Sigh, people.
