I was drunk the other day, and I was thinking about religion. Only then, I could understand why people really believe there is an afterlife. While drunk, I escaped reality and realized that I also wished there was an after life so that I could see my husband again after he or I die because I love him very much, he is my best friend and after 10 years we are still very much in love. (Yes, atheist know how to love too.) I can see how people force themselves to believe this to make death more tolerable.

Oh yes.

Someone close to me lost both his parents when he was very young. He has told me on more than one occasion that he "has to" believe in God and an afterlife because he wants to believe that they're in a good place now. I feel like a jerk for arguing with him on that point, so I don't.

For me, the finality of death makes my days with my loved ones that much more precious.

No, not really. I generally understand why and the reason(s) are generally apparent and they can be good or bad. I assume that this is not the case for you hence the question. Care to share?

I think I figured it out. See, my wife is employed in Singapore. She's been away for 8 months now. I realize that my 7-year old daughter has been motherless for a very long time. I want to completely understand what she is going through and it's hard for me. I did not experience what she is now experiencing. I finally see sadness in her eyes, which I didn't notice before and I know I can never, even if I tried, compensate for her mother. Oh, man.

I think you're beating yourself up unneccessarily. You need to discuss the situation with your daughter and take it from there. There is no point in you getting upset over what has happened as you can't change the past and your upset will be obvious to your daughter. Kids have gone through a lot worse things than being without a Mum for 8 months and suffered no serious ill effects. Your daughter has her father there to support her through this.

My brother went thru something like this -- his wife was offered a place at a very hard to get college program for 18 mos on one coast while he was offered a very good job on the other coast. They decided these were not to be missed opportunites for either of them, so she went to school New Hampshire while he starting working in Oregon and naturally their 3-yr old daughter went with him. My brother says it was the hardest 18 mos of all their lives and if they'd known how emotionally difficult it was going to be they probably wouldn't have done it but (and this is my main point) other than outrageously high phone bills the main effect of separation on their daughter was a relationship with her father that was just as strong and close as the one with her mother. I agree with Tank, you should probably take it easier on yourself. Sure your girl is missing her mom's physical presence and that makes her sad, but sad itsn't fatal and it's far from the worst thing that could be happening to a 7-yr old. Her mom isn't completely out of her life, she's only an extremely expensive phone call away.

I can tell this is going to be a long week. I sat in the dark all weekend because if I went into the light I felt like I would die. No I'm at school where the lights seem 10 times as bright. I've accidentally fallen asleep in 3 classes today :-\ At least it is a short week this week.
Strange but not a stranger

I love my car more than I love most people.

Of course not! I only do stripes :P But really, when I went to the doctor, he told me that I would probably be sensitive to the light for a while. Also, no riding for two weeks. Not sure which is worse, :P
