Turner

The way he expresses light in an oil painting just astonishes me. It is so much more emotionally real than any photograph could ever be. I don't know why but I can look at his work and just lose myself in what he produced.

What is it about his work make him stand out from the crowd as far as you are concerned. Why did he come to mind?

When I was young, I used to study his works for hours, trying to actually make sense of the often impossible geometry. I don't know... I just get this feeling of looking at a 3D object and yet knowing that it can more often than not not actually exist as is in three dimensions. I's more or less all about this false feeling of depth that makes no sense... Fascinates me.

The Magic Pudding

Caravaggio, why? seems to do a good capturing the life of his subjects.

My two favourites have already been cited, in Turner and Caravaggio. I'd add Picasso to the list as well. He didn't just paint pictures, he made statements.

It's worth reading the Wiki concerning the symbolism.

They're mesmerising in a way in that they draw one in and then fool one's sense of perspective, they demand to be studied.

More capturing the 'death' in that one  :)  But the lighting is wonderful. How artists can capture the effects in paint is beyond me, I'd love to understand how they do it.

I've never got Picasso in the way some do. I can appreciate his work but being a bit of a realist it never seems to have the Wow! factor it does for some.

LARA

The Classics- Salvadore Dali, M.C. Escher (though he did not consider himself an artist) for their intellectual coolness, Mary Cassat for her so alive and beautiful renderings, Monet for his calmness, Vincent van Gogh, for his wild technique and startling originality.

Animation-  I love Pixar animation studios later work.  At about the time they did Monsters, Inc., they really nailed it.  Genndy Tartakovsky, for Samurai Jack and The Clone Wars, and whoever heads up the animation in Courage the Cowardly Dog (sorry I'll have to internet this one later!)  And more...I love the art of animation.

Architecture- Frank Lloyd Wright, sure we live in buildings, but they are still art, too.

There are probably a ton of other 3-D and 2-D artists, animators, photographers, cinematographers, graphic artists, game designers, architects etc. whose work I love and whose names I don't know or can't think of right now who really speak to me, inspire me or are just a delight that I would love to include or find the names of.  I'm very particular in my taste in art, but I really just love art in general, love the creative process, and appreciate all levels of art from the very uneducated, to the primitive, to the classic, to the high tech.

:D Oh yeah, and a plug here for my kid. This isn't just nepotism here.  I really love the character of her art and as young as she is, she is really amazing me with her ability and insight as a visual artist.
