The coot chicks are getting bigger.

Curious cow is curious

You can't sneak up on a deer but at least they look straight at you! Saw him out on an early morning walk.

First time ever visitor to my garden! A Sparrow Hawk! Not the best photo but only had an iPhone to hand.

whitetails every morning. the fawns are losing their spots, and i have to dodge between four and eleven of the ignorant things in the road every day on the way to work in the pre dawn, and sometimes a few in the bright after noon on the way home. the pickup is running again, so i dont have to ride the 52 year old motorcycle to work in the cold. better to hit a buck with a 6000-pound truck than me on an old motorcycle. but inthe afternoon its 85 degrees, and id rather be getting 50mpg than 13.

my son shot a raccoon that has been crawling to the porch with paralyzed hind legs for a few days now, a symptom of rabies. the wife sent it off to be analyzed, for some reason. obcious what it was. if it comes back positive the government will air-drop edible vaccines. dunno how well that will do, but its good that theyre trying.

Interesting that there is an edible vaccine. I did not know such a thing existed.

the raccoons are a common vector out here. possums dont carry it, because their body temperature is a bit too low. and the coons are so social hat they spread it easily. skunks get a bad reputation cecause of their fearless behaviour, but thats just a normal skunk.

im not seeing as many rabbits and skunks as i am used to. could be just the usual low population densities in the woodlands. in the southwest deserts the visible biomass scurrying around at dawn was astonishing -- foxes, kangaroo rats, pocket mice, bats, everywhere you looked. deserts are busy places.

still  a few hummingbirds hthat havent bailed for the tropics. heard a goldfinch this morning. beautiful little things.

i did not take this picture

Just read this no FaceBook. Fact or fiction?

"Do you know that...?  - Old bees don't return to the hive in the evening? They spnd the night on flowers, and if they have the chance to see another sunrise, they resume their activity by bringing pollen or nectar to the colony. They do this sensing that the end is near. No bee waits to die in the hive so as not to burden the others.

The flying spaghetti monster has been discovered by a marine exploration team.  The site is 900 miles west of the Chile coast. There are mountains of colossal height there and some deep exploration by a ROV has shown some strange creatures. One has been named Bathyphysa sinphonophore. or FSM

its true that bees sometimes end up spending the night out. ive seen bees wet down by fungicide rigs unable to fly back out of the flowers when they sprayed during the day. the grower was dismayed when i showed him and explained that daylight spraying meant no pollination that day. he had a limited number of rigs and couldnt spray everything at night. bees fly back and forth until their wings wear out, and there will always be a last flight. perhaps somebody found an old bee that couldnt make it back, and generated the story.

but the "sensing when theyre old," and "not to be a burden on the hive" stuff is expecting a lot of philosphy from a bug with a brain the size of a pinhead.
