Lately I've been seeing a lot of commercials on TV about Charles becoming King, tho I haven't been able to find anything on Google about it.

Is the Queen actually planning to retire soon, or are people just anticipating her imminent death?  If the second, that's horribly ghoulish.

I'm pretty sure Betty the Tooth intends to go out in harness.  Charlie boy might have to wait a bit, yet.

Would the British prefer William to become king instead of Charles?

If I were Charles I would abdicate and make way for my way more popular son when Elizabeth dies.

It's very highly unlikely that QE2 will abdicate, ever.

Are those the only two choices - death and abdication?  Abdication makes it sound like she did something wrong, rather than just deciding to retire and hand off the throne to someone younger.

Well I suppose the Poms could go for the French option...  otherwise, yes, they're the only choices.
