I find it odd that if someone tells people they can feel the presence of aliens or their deceased cat they must have a disorder of some sort but if it's jesus or god they're just "filled with the holy spirit".

When filled with certain types of spirit, I have seen all manner of things.  I've never been filled with the holy variety and that's probably why I've not seen god.

The Seventh Day Adventist I dated in high school went through some sort of depression after I broke up with him (we had only dated a year...which I guess was a long time for high school kids).  After breaking the sabbath and smoking cigars (in his belief the body should be treated like a temple) ..I think he might have even quit college...he then apparently had a come to Jesus moment.  And by that I mean literally.  He called me at my dad's house (after tracking down the number through family in the phone book) and started telling me about how he had just sat down with god to have a chat.  I told him I didn't believe god physically showed himself to anyone; yet he still was very set in trying to convince me that god had been sitting next to him just as real as a person.  I forgot what else he said (been out of high school for a while) but it lead me to telling him not to call back.

Achronos' comments reminded me of that.

btw, my ex boyfriend is fine (in that he didn't stay depressed);...last I heard of him he was a church elder or something.

I'm glad to hear he's fine.  Many people that are hammered over the head with law and must do's have some kind of fall back and it's either for better (as apparently evidenced by your ex-bf) by better definitions and implementations or worse...worse in relation to exiting Christianity all together.  This forum wouldn't see that as worse though.
