Quote from: "Martin TK"I really wish we had more stong theists to come by who could debate their beliefs without ad hominem attacks, and who could cite reliable sources, without being pompous asses.  I just got booted from a site, where this Biblical Scholar simply wouldn't leave me alone because he was on a mission to convince me that there was a historical Jesus.  Even after I told him that there was NOTHING he could say or do, he and another guy just kept on me to the point that I finally said ONE thing about them being dogmatic.  I was the one who got a warning, me... then I really got nasty with one of the moderators who got an attitude with me like he was a judge or something, even to the taking the position of being superior to me.  That's not a good idea, so when I got finished with him, I was banned...

I have no evidence to support this, but I am under the impression that because atheist forums place more emphasis on logic and reason, that they are more welcoming to theists because they know they can defeat their arguments by such methods. Whereas theist forums shun atheists because they rely on faith and belief instead to support their propositions, and shy away from vigorous exchange. Ray Comfort even bans anyone from his site if they disrespect Jesus by typing his name in lower case and profanity of any kind - even in jest - is banned. It's almost as if he doesn't want open debate. But I could be wrong.
It would appear that dogmatic, monotheistic religions rely so much on the appeal to popularity and authority that a decent logical argument is a great threat and they just can't cope with that sort of thing.
If religions were TV channels atheism is turning the TV off.

Quote from: "Martin TK"I have to say this, I have been going to a lot of forums lately, and this is the ONLY one where a person's opinions are really accepted and not ridiculed.
I have to agree. I am amazed at how some very volatile topics have only calm discourse. Too often other forums erupt into ad hominem attacks and snarky comments.

It takes vigilance. Remember that the HAF is what you make it.
I want bad people to look forward to and celebrate the day I die, because if they don't, I'm not living up to my potential.

Couldn't agree with you more, Will.   :hail:

As a Christian, I have to say that I am extremely impressed by the civility shown towards those who put forward views opposed to what the majority on this board would believe.

The Mods are very hot on that sort of thing, but the membership try not to get snarky and pick up incidents even before the mods do, and the issue gets discussed. I have had my collar felt by Whitney for the post below, and quite rightly too, I'd just had enough of being abused by the sort of person who relies on other peoples good manners to get away with being rude and bad mannered themselves.

Quote from: "Filanthropod"You're not calling me a moron, are you Tank? I suppose you're not. There are rules here, after all.
In for a penny in for a pound as they say. No. I'm calling you a Moron, you walk like a Moron, talk like a Moron and quack like a Moron. Can I be more explicit? No I don't think so. I'll take my strips, but you'll still be a Moron spouting moronic ideas provided to you by other morons who think that using long words will make them sound smart through their dullard mindless and delusional maundering. People like you who hold ideas like you are singularly dangerous to humanity. You despoil all that is good about humanity. You deny real science and attempt to insert your own strawman in its place. Your behaviour and attitude are truly despicable, I have nothing but contempt for people like you and the ideas you spout from the pulpit of selfish insanity. I'm not scared of calling a moron a moron and you sir, are a moron.

So people do lose their cool, but vary rarely.
