It really, really depends on what type of gamer you are. It's a mature story-based interactive drama. There's no retries. The littlest things can have drastic consequences later on. Not really a spoiler, but if you want to remain totally agnostic as to what happens, don't read this:

[spoiler:25yx03oh]At one point in the game you're given a choice to kill someone. I won't say who or which character you're playing at the time. But, being given a choice to kill someone in a game is not something new. However, I've never actually felt guilty about it during a game. In any other game it's simply, 'Do I want the storyline to progress this way or that way?' But here... it really feels like a moral choice. It's crazy.[/spoiler:25yx03oh]

Either way, I played through the first couple chapters last night with the wife watching and this morning she actually said, unprompted, "I really like the story." It was funny... I told her to tell me what to do at the beginning of the game...

[spoiler:25yx03oh]The game starts with you (Ethan Mars) getting out of bed. I said, "So what should I do?" The wife says, "Brush your teeth." So I (Ethan) went into the bathroom and brushed my teeth. She was dumbfounded because she had been joking, haha.[/spoiler:25yx03oh]

Anyway, a Gears of War/Halo/CoD fanboy won't be interested in it. A Madden-loving fratboy won't be interested in it. Film buffs, Final Fantasy fans, Silent Hill fans, anyone who's played Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit) will be interested in it. Anybody who loves a good mystery/thriller will be interested in it. To be honest, I'm probably going to feature the game in my dissertation.

that's funny because I'm a cod, halo and gears fanboy and I am seriously contemplating getting another ps3 (sold my last one to use as a down payment on a car) just for that game.

Well, I should say that it's a generalization, but a safe one to make. If you think you'll appreciate the game, then yes, it's a definitely reason to get the PS3. Then there's God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII...

I understand, I'm what you would call a gamer for life. .I can play just about any type of game out there and enjoy it. Right now I'm working through mass effect 2, just finished Bioshock 2.

To be honest, I never played my ps3 when I had it..If there is a game on both consoles I will always get it on xbox. I just prefer the controller for some reason..So as far as final fantasy is concerned, I'll be getting that on 360. Never really got into GOW either, something about not being able to control the camera bugs me.

Heavy Rain though has piqued my interest since I first saw a tech demo for it years ago. .I love a good story, nowadays I find myself leaning away from mindless shooters towards games that have substance. Can't wait for Alan Wake either.

This really seems to be a trend. I hope it keeps up.  :bananacolor:

Wanna talk about epic storytelling, just finished Mass Effect 2 and it was amazing. .Then again, Bioware has always been great at unfolding a story.

I feel the same exact way. I love MW2, don't get me wrong, but I just don't like first person shooters like I used to.

Would it kill developers to make a first person shooter with a story? What about a WW2 FPS with a heart wrenching, Saving Private Ryan-esque story? Now that would be unforgettable.

Ever played Brother in Arms?  It's pretty much exactly what you're describing with some strategy thrown in. .Also Bioshock 1 and 2 were amazing as far as advancing story in a fps, As well as system shock 1 & 2 and Deus Ex.

I think developers are branching out a bit in fps's, it's just baby steps..Look at Mirrors Edge( I absolutely love that game) and Portal.

Yes, I remember Brothers In Arms. I only wished I played it through. I was a little younger then and didn't have as much patience with games as I do now.

Bioshock (1 and 2) is an amazing game. The first one is a masterpiece. I just love the whole "individualism" thing, and the whole ideology of Andrew Ryan. It still keeps me interested when I play it.

I'm not saying that all FPS's lack story, but I just wish that a lot more had it.

ClicheGuevara

I totally agree, we need more interaction. .. and I totally omitted one of the best fps's out there. .. Fallout 3!  talk about a bad ass story.

Fallen Jedii

If everything goes right, I'll be purchasing both Heavy Rain and MAG. Quite a duo there. Can't wait.

Reginus

Quote from: "karadan"You are playing at the moment? Cool. I'm just getting into my second year playing. I've just started my own corp and will have a starbase up and running in about a month. I love Eve. I love how uncompromising it is.

Are you in a player or NPC corp? We should hook up in game.

NPC - got transfered to Perkone after the corp I was in died.

My in-game name is Reginus.

Well, MAG is extremely disappointing. It's a great concept, but it's just so poorly executed.

First of all, what the hell is with the health system? You actually have a health meter? What the hell is this? I felt like I was transported back to PS1.The game is also just flat out unrealistic. I shouldn't have to shoot a guy twice with a sniper rifle if the shot was well placed.

I'm trying to enjoy this game right now, but no. It's just not my style. Perhaps I'll trade it in and put forth the cash for my purchase of Heavy Rain.

Luckily, I also bought MLB 10 The Show in addition with MAG, so the whole trip wasn't a total loss. The Show is once again fantastic.

G-Roll

i finally got heavy rain. its beautiful!! my only complaints are the movement system sometimes pisses me off and often id like to know what my options are. the game requires you to press buttons and roll or push the left thumb stick to perform actions. just it isnt always clear what the action is. for example, i tried to cook dinner and thought i was going to grab a pizza, but i snatched a beer instead.
and the story is soooooo good that my girl friend got mad that i was playing it without her. she claimed that she likes to help me make decisions and now will be lost in the story line.
