Hello all!

I am around 40 years old :verysad: There is a big HS community here but I always felt like a loner!!!
Why do most Christians always mention God in every conversation in every subject? It is the reason why we changed HSmethods and don't go to the meet ups anymore. At first I thought that I could ignore the God/Bible parts but it is to hard....I felt like a heathen and a bad parent!! :sadcry:
I am not bringing up the fact each and every time  that I DON'T believe in God either!!! I can be a good, responsible, warm hearted, good willing citizen without believing...
And now I am going to read all the posts...well most of them....

ps grammar;/spelling mistakes are due to the fact that English is not my 1st language!

Hi GDP!

You're English is fine - I wouldn't have guessed from your intro you're not a native speaker.  :)

Hi and welcome!!  :P

Is there actual mention of God in some of the home schooling materials?  I'm just curious to know...

It's true that some Christians feel the need to mention god in just about every conversation.  I work with someone like this.  She's a really sweet person, but she talks about God aallll the time, and it makes me really uncomfortable.  It really sucks.

Thanks for the welcome!!! And thanks for the compliment Ellybean.
Bfat: I found it pretty hard to find secular materials. Probably because most HS make the decision to home school due to religious reasons and that's were the market is. And it is almost undo able to skip the parts about the bible and such because then there is not much left :-). I found one company that I thought was working with a great concept (every subject built around and worked with novels about a certain subject)but so religious it wasn't even funny...
Also the HS meetings were pretty heavy...We were with a home school group that was Christian but you didn't have to be Christian to join.Start with praying, end with praying and every subject was loaded with psalms and verses. I remember we had one meeting were also the dads were advised to come because it was specifically about them: the home school dad. So my husband came with me. We had to listen to a speaker whos was also a pastor and I knew right away we were in big trouble. I didn't know that when we came otherwise I would have stayed home! From beginning to the end he only talked about the role of the dad in the family, about the husband being the leader of the family, kids needed to obey and keep there opinion to them selves, God said this and God said that etc... Halfway my husband had to pick up daughter from dance lessons. the pastor guy began talking about the role  of a woman. She had to obey her husband and blablabla When my husband and daughter came back I was waiting in the hall way. I was sooo pissed!!And I felt so offended!  Some of the members were so nice to call me right when I came home to say they totally understand and that even for them (they go to church every Sunday)it was a heavy heavy preach...That was the end of the HS group meetings for us...And even now a HS mom calls me some times and invites me to church!!! So last Christmas when she called me again I was totlaly honest: We don't feel comfortable in church. I had the rest  of my story ready but that wasn't necessary thank goodness!
Now daughter is doing virtual school. Same program as a normal 'brick and mortar' school but then at home. Best of both worlds for her!!

O and I got a book one time to read from her. Books/novels categorized on age and/or subject.
Well some subjects had some notes. The books about being gay and about sex and having a boy/girlfriend was marked AVOID. So yeah that I realized we were in the wrong place. My kids know about sex/being gay and such things ever since they were little. Daughter was 7 or 8 when she started to lend every book about sexual education from the library. My opinion is that you show them what is going on out there whenever THEY are ready. The moment you are going to hide things for your kids you are asking for trouble.

Wow, that's really scary that pretty much the only homeschooling material out there is so heavily religious.  And sexist too!!  Jeez!  I never even really considered that.  It's so outdated, thinking that way, but I guess for some of the religious crazies, going back in time to rampant sexism, homophobia, and ignorance about science sounds like a dream come true.   :P

As a fellow parent, I totally agree.  And welcome to the forum!
