QuoteA description of the depravity of human nature, and the deplorable corruption of a great part of mankind.

to The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. The sinner here described is an atheist, one that saith there is no Judge or Governor of the world, no Providence ruling over the affairs of men. He says this in his heart. He cannot satisfy himself that there is none, but wishes there were none, and pleases himself that it is possible there may be none; he is willing to think there is none. This sinner is a fool; he is simple and unwise, and this is evidence of it: he is wicked

and profane, and this is the cause. The word of God is a discerner of these thoughts. No man will say, There is no God, till he is so hardened in sin, that it is become his interest that there should be none to call him to an account. The disease of sin has infected the whole race of mankind. They are all gone aside, there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Whatever good is in any of the children of men, or is done by them, it is not of themselves, it is God's work in them. They are gone

aside from the right way of their duty, the way that leads to happiness, and are turned into the paths of the destroyer. Let us lament the corruption of our nature, and see what need we have of the grace of God: let us not marvel that we are told we must be born again. And we must not rest in any thing short of union with Christ, and a new creation to holiness by his Spirit. The psalmist endeavours to convince sinners of the evil and danger of their way, while they think themselves very wise,

and good, and safe. Their wickedness is described. Those that care not for God's people, for God's poor, care not for God himself. People run into all manner of wickedness, because they do not call upon God for his grace. What good can be expected from those that live without prayer? But those that will not fear God, may be made to fear at the shaking of a leaf. All our knowledge of the depravity of human nature should endear to us salvation out of Zion. But in heaven alone shall the whole

company of the redeemed rejoice fully, and for evermore. The world is bad; oh that the Messiah would come and change its character! There is universal corruption; oh for the times of reformation! The triumphs of Zion's King will be the joys of Zion's children. The second coming of Christ, finally to do away the dominion of sin and Satan, will be the completing of this salvation, which is the hope, and will be the joy of every Israelite indeed. With this assurance we should comfort ourselves and

one another, under the sins of sinners and sufferings of saints.

Better link to his work. It's all nonsense.

In the OP it seems as though the author did not use paragraphs correctly. I'm not convinced that this is how it was originally written. I'm still looking for the original version. So far it seems as though Matthew Henry was a capable writer.

Anyone, what's wrong with me? OCD? I can't help but think I'm some kind of fucked up...

Not really, just someone who doesn't want to unnecessarily straw man the opposition because its "fun" to set one up and laugh at it ; )

Personally, I find it silly that anyone, christian or not, would listen to something so poorly written assuming it is authentic instead of just instantly disregarding it.  Kinda pointless imo.

It'd be like an atheist saying: "There god is.. maybe not cus I think umm it be not sort of hah...etc!" and someone quoting it and then saying "omg look at the stupid atheist!  Atheism must be stupid cus this person is stupid! haha!"

Just my two cents.
To all the 'Golden Rule' moralists out there:

If a masochist follows the golden rule and harms you, are they being 'good'? ^_^

"The foundation of all religion being laid in our relation to God as our Creator, it was fit that the book of divine revelations which was intended to be the guide, support, and rule, of religion in the world, should begin, as it does, with a plain and full account of the creation of the world--in answer to that first enquiry of a good conscience, "Where is God my Maker?" (Job 35:10). Concerning this the pagan philosophers wretchedly blundered, and became vain in their imaginations, some asserting the world's eternity and self-existence, others ascribing it to a fortuitous concourse of atoms: thus "the world by wisdom knew not God," but took a great deal of pains to lose him.The holy scripture therefore, designing by revealed religion to maintain and improve natural religion, to repair the decays of it and supply the defects of it, since the fall, for the reviving of the precepts of the law of nature, lays down, at first, this principle of the unclouded light of nature, That this world was, in the beginning of time, created by a Being of infinite wisdom and power, who was himself before all time and all worlds."

After reading that much on genesis I don’t think im going to be reading much more of his works on the bible. It was fun to see someone defend the actual story of creation as it appears in the first chapter of the book. Its been a while since ive heard someone go with that as opposed to science or the influence of science.
I wonder if his works are still relevant. Or if a newer, shinier, more modern version is available for today’s Christians. I would hope so, seeming religions must evolve/change with us or they will just slow down and retard our societies.

Yeah he wrote in the 18th century. It's seems pretty dated now. The zeitgeist has moved on.

It's interesting, his take on atheism.  I always thought of "sin" as an action, like theft, murder, coveting thy neighbor's snowblower, etc.

But non-belief is not an action.  It's a state of being, which one generally has no control over.  If we have no control over it, than it must be from "God" right?  So God made the atheists!  Therefore, non-belief must have some "purpose" under God's plan, so it can't be a sin!     ::HEAD EXPLODES::
