Quote from: "frog818"Does anybody watch Mixed Martial Arts, UFC, Strikeforce ect?  Here in Oz there just finally starting to put it on free to air TV.  However there are a quite a few good matches on youtube, the one with Kazushi Sakuraba vs Royce Gracie in 2000 Pride Grand Prix is a stand out.  Up and till that point Royce had never really lost a match and it signaled the decline of total dominance the Gracie’s had enjoyed before.

Eh, UFC...eh...sorry to anyone who really likes it but I just don't find it all that particularly great.  I've heard all these fighters talk all about their extensive knowledge, training and technique and it always eventually boils down to street fight techniques or hugging each other on the ground for 10 minutes with each of them trying to get on top and punch the other in the face....but eh, maybe it's just me.

I stopped doing MMA about 3 years ago. I had 3 fights under my belt and enjoyed it. But training took its toll and Im to old now to do that stuff. I teach Kick boxing and BJJ from time to time on deployments and what not, but if I train and fight then my joints SUFFER.
Honestly I think in a 1 on 1 fight MMA, (stand up and ground fighting training) is the best way to go for self defence too. One can argue that Kung Fu has the death punch or you can snap a mans neck with a simple twist here or there but how do you practice that?
Now if you must fight multiple opponets, I think your screwwed no matter what you know or how tuff you are, unless you are chuck norris.

True, the only chance your got against multiple opponents is if you have a weapon, but even then the odds are heavily stacked against you and if they take your weapon of you and use against you, then your in deep deep trouble.

That's why the ultimate techinque will always be to run away or to avoid fighting all together.

Did anyone ever figure out how Bruce Lee died?

If I remember correctly he died due to cerebral edema (brain swelling).

I agree, I liked his view on the more silly, non-practical stuff of martial arts.

Namely "A belt is just something that keeps one's pants up" and "Boards don't hit back."

I went for some Kung Fu, then Kickboxing and then BJJ. Then I ran out of time, but I plan on starting up again with the last two. Anyway, my 2cents... martial arts should be mandatory in schools and kindergardens and maybe even in ... now stay with me folks... in maternity wards just because Pat Robertson (yes, the antichrist himself) thinks there's something wrong with them. Youtube it if you don't believe me.

Quote from: "frog818"Is anybody here interested in the marital arts?  As for me I love the marital arts but I'm never been in one spot long enough to obtain any sort of rank.  So far out all the different types I've tried Aikido is differently my favorite.

Yes, i like martial arts, i really love it. I used nunchaku in my training in martial arts , how about you?

when i was a kid i had a pair. i would stash them in the back of my pants and whip em out like bruce lee. actually i think i may still have a pair.
you could actually learn alot about nunchakus from watching bruce... watch him close and you will figure out the little details. i guess its like skaters watching the pros body placement, line they skate in, and technique to learn how to skate. apply what you see in everyday practice.
of course an experienced teacher is a much better way to go.

I am a bjj nut.  Most fun I have had in a sport....a sort of physical chess.   (although I don't really know how to play chess)  ;)
Yes I'm atheist and no I don't hate theist OR think they are dumb....well most at least  :)

Tanker

I wrestled when I was younger and in the Army we were taught "combatives" which is basicly Jujitsu with few other moves mixed in. It was really fun when we had "platoon wars" imagine 30 on 30 fights, no striking though just throws, take downs, submissions, counters, preasure points, ect. They were full speed and contact but we weren't trying to actually hurt each other....to badly (hence no striking).
