"A website has published what it says are 573,000 intercepted pager messages sent during the 9/11 attacks in the United States."

I've just been checking out some of the texts at the time the first plane hit. I've not seen anything yet but there is rather a lot to go through. Some texts already seem to have been deleted or censored though.

I'm not a 9/11 conspiracy theorist in the slightest but these texts are certainly morbidly interesting. The 9/11 truthers are going to jump all over this, i suspect.

Yeah, I don't know what happened that day but there is clearly some BS going on, the WTC 7 building just collapsed, no plane or anything, it just collapsed demolition style, the engineers that were involved in the construction of the building said that there was no way that a plane crash could cause both buildings to collapse like that and it was really freaky that the passport of one of the "terrorists" could be found in a plane that supposedly vaporized from the jet fuel which was proven to not be able to vaporize steel so that makes the whole pentagon crash really suspect, this all goes back to those Zeitgeist movies, the whole 9/11 thing is seriously fishy not to mention that several of those terrorists who were supposedly on the plane are still ALIVE.

Actually those have some good explanations to them. The FBI admitted that in the fog of things they misidentified some of the bombers. WTC 7 was also reported as untouched at first because given the hectic event going on (there had never been a jumbo jet that was intentionally slammed into a building like that, everyone here is old enough to remember 9/11 and I don't need to stress how amazingly scary it was) they didn't realize how extensive the damage was.

It's scary they can do this but I think it was to try and catch who did it. There is a fine line between tyranny and protective measures.  I err to the side of caution and say it was meant to be a way of catching what was going on. Remember, when the towers were falling no one had any earthly idea what was going on. No one realized that the attacks were basically set for the Pentagon, WTC, and the White House. It was scary, chaotic, and terrifying. The perfect example of the apex of terrorism. Carlos the Jackal, eat your heart out.

I admit, it's scary the government can swoop down and find all of our personal messages like this, but perhaps it's can be good as well. The world is getting way too complicated, isn't it?

Well it was a data centre in Israel owned by Mossad which intercepted the call between Monica Lewinski and Clinton... We've all been listened to for years. What astonishes me about 9/11 is that the administartion at the time didn't take the warning signals seriously. There seemed to be a degree of complacency and over-confidence. I doubt they actually knew about the attacks but there was certainly rumbles within the security services. I wonder how much they chose to ignore, though.

Some of the texts on that site make for pretty sobering reading. I can't even imagine what it must have been like to be in New York on that day :(

Not just the administration at the time, but the one previous too. Don't forget, the same terrorist group tried to destroy the WTC in 1993 and we did virtually nothing about it except thank our good fortune it wasn't worse.
Lots of missteps and bumbling between 1993 and 2001.

I think because we also were coming out of the Cold War (though I think it just shifted players a little) and didn't want to ruin the shaky truce/friendship we and the former Soviet Union were building. Being overly aggressive could have been seen as re-escalating proxy wars and low level conflicts.

And think, it takes someone truly insane and determined to look at a building and think of how they would go about destroying it. I actually kind of do that at work, I'll look at the building and think "If I were a terrorist, what would I do for maximum damage?" Just to try and find any soft-spots on the physical security of the building.

I digress, what I'm getting at (and prepare to be shocked) is I am giving Bush Sr., Clinton, and Bush Jr. some credit here. They, along with a lot of other people, probably heard news of this and didn't imagine that an attack of this magnitude would dwarf the bombing in 93. 9/11 probably took years and years of planning to get it down just right like they did (they probably didn't expect for the passengers of flight 93 to fight back like they did).

Sometimes we get so arrogant that we don't take into effect that big layers of security have big holes in them that need to be constantly addressed.
