Last week my wife moved into a new house, which has space enough for a huge library. We own approx. 3,000 books and are now looking for bookshelves to store all these books. Most bookshelves on offer in the USA are however "adjusted" to the classical American taste, while we fancy a more contemporary, European (Scandinavian) style. We would like  something that is better than what is on offer at IKEA, preferably made from solid wood and adjustable from design. Another requirement is that it should be shipped to our new house in Virginia. I'm looking forward for any of your suggestions.

My wife's boss is Scandinavian and decorates her home and her office in contemporary Scandinavian style. I'll ask her where she gets her furniture. In the meantime, here is one place I found that delivers this style within the U.S., although they get the furniture from overseas.

Two places I really like:

http://www.dwr.com/

Edit: I'm not sure what Scandinavian style is.  But those links are for what I'd call classy contemporary.  But, if you like the style of Ikea the above two links will have some great higher quality options.  Dane design has been around at least 20 years because I know my parents bought my childhood furniture there.  Design Within Reach is more expensive but has some really nice looking items; however, I have never ordered anything from them.

Thanks to you all for the wonderful links. I fell in love with some of the furniture that I've seen on these sites. Most furniture will match perfectly with our existing Danish and Swedish furniture. Unfortunately they don't seem to offer a flexible, modular book shelve-system that is suitable to store hundreds of books. What we intend to build up is a big library, with 5 to 6 bookshelves in the corner of our room. So far the only alternatives that we found for our old IKEA Billy bookcases are either the Woodwind bookcases of Room and Board (http://www.roomandboard.com) or have the bookcases custom made for us.

Here are some cool bookshelves; some of them would be good for large collections:  http://weburbanist.com/2008/04/28/20-br ... furniture/

The bookcase on the first picture is awesome. I just need to buy a "couple" of more books (and a new house).
