Good evening everybody, I've been lurking around here for a few weeks now, quite impressed with what I've seen and read, decided that I would like to start making some contributions of my own...

So introducing myself...

I am an 18 year old student at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. I'm studying science, specifically looking to major in biochemistr and statistics.

I consider myself an agnostic atheist skeptical rationalist humanist (with apologies to the other animals, plants, fungi, protista, bacteria and archea) materialist (try saying that in one breath.) :D .

Well thats me, now I'll head off and see if I can find anything to contribute in the other rooms of this neat little corner of "teh interweb."

Welcome.  Good intro.  Wish I had, shall we say, more secular teachers growing up.  Instead, I had teachers that actively maintained my faith.  Ah, but that's a story for another time.

Hope you have as good a time here as I do; better if you can manage.   :D

Prayers that need no answer now, cause I'm tired of who I am
You were my greatest mistake, I fell in love with your sin
Your littlest sin.

Hello, and welcome, templeboy.  I've known a few people from New Zealand; they are all pretty cool.  I know you must have some knuckleheads there; I guess they all like to stay at home.   Flight of the Conchords actually seems not too far off, as far as representing a sort of typical New Zealand attitude, at least going by what I've encountered.  Have you ever seen it, and if so, what do you think of it?

Yeah, turning to the other side of the coin, I have never, ever met an American person who I didn't like.

Flight of the Chonchords is...sad to say...more accurate than I would hope! Its a great show about small fish in a big sea.

QuoteWelcome. Good intro. Wish I had, shall we say, more secular teachers growing up. Instead, I had teachers that actively maintained my faith. Ah, but that's a story for another time.

Most of my teachers were I think religous, but they were all fantastic teachers who stuck to the secular curriculum and were tolerant of others beliefs. But one teacher had massive influence on me when he shocked the entire class by telling us that he didn't believe in god. It seemed so unbelieavable (sic) because he was such an awesome teacher and he got on really well with the RE teacher...despite this little flaw, New Zealand is a very secular society (Our last 2 Prime Ministers have been openly agnostic, and that probably hasn't lost them any votes at all.)

I hardly ever think about that! Got any thoughts for an alternative name? Rationalinquirytown?

Now I would move there, just on principle!
