It really irks me when someone says to me..."God bess you...." I hear this constantly.....I always think..... who the hell are you to be so arrogant to speak for god? If I were religious, which I am not....I would say..."May god bless you...." I would never think I could speak for anyone.....and it comes across so arrogantly........"God bless you..."
I say nothing.......but I have got to think of a come back of some kind....and stay off the chopping block at the same time...... :upset:

I see what you're saying, and it definitely makes sense. What gets me is the people who say "god bless you" when I sneeze. I really don't get that one, although I've heard it has to do with people believing a sneeze made you lose part of your soul or something. Anyway, I agree with you, I don't need people saying "god bless you" to me for any reason.

I find myself saying "Bless you" roughly half the time when someone sneezes. If I don't say, "Wow" or "Seriously?" or something along those lines, that is. If I DO say "bless you" I make a mental note not to next time. I usually forget.

When someone says "God bless you" to me, I just don't thank them. Then I give them the stink eye (and snot nose).

I don't see it as a big deal. When someone says "god bless you", they are merely using a rhetorical devise to convey their own desire for you to meet with good fortune. There is no need to take it literally, and ignore their reason for saying it.

Oh big deal! A Christian says "God Bless You." I think it's beats the Muslim way of saying, "Allah bless you" by flying 4 airplanes into a building!

Always remember this!

1.) Christians come to your front door to offer you salvation and everlasting paradise through Christ...
2.) Muslims want your skin burning alive by nuclear force all in the name of the great allah!!

Most atheists are too judgemental when it comes to Christianity, meanwhile, religions such as Islam are getting away scott-free with murder in the name of their god!

I agree with hitsumei on this one. In fact, I will sometimes too use the phrase "bless you"
I see it as part of "tradition" the same way we cover our mouths when we yawn. they started as superstition and ended up just as daily little thingies we use but dont really mean.
God made me an atheist, who are you to question his wisdom!

Tell me you don't actually believe what you just wrote. Lilbeth is just one person stating her opinion on something that irritates her. You've extrapolated that to all atheists it seems.

And here's what irritates (actually it mostly amuses) me:
Quote from: "Psalm23"I think it's beats the Muslim way of saying, "Allah bless you" by flying 4 airplanes into a building!

What building did Muslims fly 4 airplanes into? I seem to remember one airplane into WTC North, one into South, and one into the Pentagon. Just seeking clarification as you seem to enjoy being outrageous and less than factual.

Quote from: "Psalm23"1.) Christians come to your front door to offer you salvation and everlasting paradise through Christ...
Really? Sure, they do that in addition to other things, like, oh say...."knocking on your door" via the Crusades, or having a nice chat with you via The Inquisition, or showing their love for all mankind by saying, "fags burn in hell!", and blowing up Planned Parenthood clinics, and having really cool marshmallow roasts while wearing white hoods, and placing one of the most brilliant humans ever to walk the face of the planet under house arrest for disagreeing with the church on a little topic of the Earth revolving around the Sun. But other than those few examples (and hundreds of others like them), xtianity is all love and snuggles and eternal damnation.  :raised:

Quote from: "Psalm23"2.) Muslims want your skin burning alive by nuclear force all in the name of the great allah!!

Some do. Sure. The ones who try to destroy people of other religions are extremists in the same way that some xtians are. What's your point?

Oh, and to get back on topic. If I've told you once, I've told you a dozen times, the proper response to a sneeze is always, "You are soooo good looking!"

I know. I spent a good fifteen minutes of my life typing that message, which will fall on deaf ears. But I'm feeling charitable today. And it keeps me out of my wife's way for the morning.  :D

Yeah, I know just the way to say things sometimes and things....but usually, the people saying this sort of thing to me, I do know as a bit arrogant. They "KNOW" they are going to heaven type of people.....If someone just says May God Bless You....I will get the meaning more....in that is what they wish for me from what they believe and I won't find it as offensive.

Quote from: "McQ"...and placing one of the most brilliant humans ever to walk the face of the planet under house arrest for disagreeing with the church on a little topic of the Earth revolving around the Sun.

Well, in all fairness that wasn't really why Galileo met with house arrest. Originally his views were censored, and he was forced to recant, and then stayed safely away from the issue for some time. Though he was highly respected, and friends with Cardinal Barberini, who had opposed the original condemnation of Galileo, so when he became Pope Urban the VIII, he gave Galileo permission to publish his book "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems", with the strict instruction that it be unbiased, and present an equal and judicial hearing of both sides of the issue, as well as including Pope Urban's own views in the book. Galileo instead presented a highly biased view, supporting heliocentricism, and against geocentricism. Though even this was not really what did him in. The person he made the advocate in his book for geocentricism was Pope Urban the VIII, making him come across as a fool.

In doing so, he angered the Pope enough to retract his protection, and Galileo was then placed in full view of the inquisitors. So, it was more than arguably how he went about it, than what it was that he had to say. Galileo was somewhat notorious for presenting counter positions as idiotic, and just being kind of a jerk to people that disagreed with him.

What I find both funny and sad though, is that after Descartes got word of what had happened to Galileo, he held off the publication of his book "Le Monde" (or "The World"), out of fear of meeting with similar retribution for his views on physics and biology.

If you want to name a martyr for science and reason meeting up with the inquisition, then I think that Giordano Bruno, the Renaissance philosopher is a far better example. He was actually burned at the stake for his views.
