This is interesting ...

The Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions

QuoteOur Mission
The Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions was created to cultivate harmony among the world's religious and spiritual communities and foster their engagement with the world and its guiding institutions in order to achieve a just, peaceful and sustainable world.

To accomplish this, we invite individuals and communities who are equally invested in attaining this goal.

Our Vision
The vision of the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions is of a just, peaceful and sustainable world in which:

    * Religious and spiritual communities live in harmony and contribute to a better world from their riches of wisdom and compassion
    * Religious and cultural fears and hatreds are replaced with understanding and respect
    * People everywhere come to know and care for their neighbors
    * The richness of human and religious diversity is woven into the fabric of communal, civil, societal and global life
    * The world's most powerful and influential institutions move beyond narrow self-interest to realize common good
    * The Earth and all life are cherished, protected, healed and restored
    * All people commit to living out their highest values and aspirations

... will this help or hinder globally (from our POV)?

Will

It stands almost no chance of working, or being effective, but I like the idea. It might be a good idea to have a few nonbelievers there.
I want bad people to look forward to and celebrate the day I die, because if they don't, I'm not living up to my potential.

Faithless

There is no way in hell they'd ever get all those religious leaders of varying religions to sit together and discuss anything intelligently or compatibly.  I'm sure the Christians and Muslims would be at each other's throats in minutes, while the Jews and pagans watch with great interest while consuming bagels and orange juice.

However, I'm sure they could get WBA backing:  "And in this corner, the Man from Iran, the Desert Duke, the Arab Sandblaster, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad!  And in the other corner, the Bible Thumber Extraordinaire, the Preacher Screecher, the American Evilangelist, Billy Graham!  Gentlemen, come out with your holy books ready to swing!"

"It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand." - Mark Twain

I agree. It's a lovely idea but it will never work. Kind of ironic that these loving, peaceful, people can't get along.

To my mind it's obvious ... if you genuinely believe you represent the one true religion and one true god you aren't going to fully cooperate with those of "false" religions. IT therefore (to my mind) stands to reason that many (if not all) of those engaged in this venture probably have some kind of agenda to ensure their religion gets whatever choice position or pickings are available.

Atheists don't need to indulge in such in-fighting ... we think everybody's wrong  (and we don't even know if we're right, LOL)
