I didn't want to junk up the sex and religion thread but this occurred to me when I was reading it.  Does anyone know if there have been any studies comparing academic performance or IQ with the average age of first sex?

I hang out with a pretty smart crowd.  Here's a sampling of some the ages they first had consensual sex.

24 x 3
23
22
21
20
19 x 4

And the answer is yes, if you were wondering if I just randomly go around asking friends questions about sex.  Of that grouping only the person who lost his virginity at 21 was very religious.  The rest are either agnostic, deist, or barely practicing Christians and, I believe, one atheist other than myself.

I know this is not a representative sample but it brings the question to mind.

Interesting topic.  I would wonder if boredom may play a part.  Coming from a small college town in Virginia (yes Thomas Jefferson town better known as Charlottesville) there was really not much to do as a teen so the general rule was to have sex.  Now the town is crime ridden so I am sure its even worse.  But I think we all "did it" by the time we entered high school.  Actually i remember being picked on in middle school because I was still a virgin.  I think it would be hard to narrow to IQ, it's pretty culture driven in many areas.

16 x 1 - IQ not know but I bet it's off the charts, hehe :D

A quick EBSCOHost search didn't return anything. I'll let you in on a little secret though... most university libraries have an instant message reference librarian. Check out their websites. If you want, you can just IM them and ask them questions, especially if you don't have access to article databases yourself.  :)

I lost my virginity at age 15 and was having sex only at that age. As of now it has almost been 7 years since the last time I had sex. As for intelligence, well, in high school there were peers telling me that I seem more like a college student and several teachers informed me that I write at college level.

Yeah.. it's been almost 7 years as of now.

I'd like to see a study, perhaps of PHD's.

I work with a bunch of PhDs and they are all pervert horndogs, maybe they got a late start and are making up for it now:)

The average age for first teen sex in America is currently 14.9 years old according to the study done by Mathematica Policy Research, Inc run to determine if abstinence education affected the age.  Apparently abstinence education had zero measurable affect on what age teens first had sex.

I was totally surprised by that figure though I'd had classmates who had sex together as early as sixth grade.  It was the result of that study that got me asking people when they first had sex.  My "sample" is horribly skewed as we are all non-aggressive, non-forward people but all of us have very liberal attitudes about sex and sexuality.

I guess I'd like a detailed breakdown of first sexual activity by IQ, level of education achieved, academic performance, liberal vs. conservative outlook, economic status, religion or non-religion, and whatever other demographics people come up with.

I'm just incredibly curious as to what makes a "late bloomer" - sexually speaking.
