I haven't looked at this yet, what I'm hearing doesn't appeal to me.  Designing something with regard to the limitations of one medium such as a phone and applying it to a PC doesn't make sense to me.  Phones have touch and small screens, PCs have mice and large screens.

I find that above ugly, PC to phones is like houses to camping, I might skip this one.

I wish they'd just re-issue XP with minimal tweaks, if any.

I think you can disregard that interface if you like and go with the traditional view.

I'm guessing by going with that style they are trying to break the barrier left for some people that find using the traditional set up awkward and are more tempted by the iPad and other similar devices. With that interface it wouldn't be hard too hard to drop onto a tablet pc and other formats, they have already implemented a similar style with the windows phone and Xbox (which is awful) so I am guessing they are trying to create a unified front across there product range so people that are use to using windows might be more likely to buy a device that uses a Microsoft OS rather than iOS or android. Also every tech demo I have seen with that OS has always had a large segment using a touch screen display rather than a keyboard and mouse so maybe that's hinting at what direction Microsoft wants to push the market with this OS.

Ye to some extent apparently.

QuoteThe Windows 7/Windows 8 shift won't be like that. With Windows 8, the all-new Metro interface is the default, and you can't get into the familiar old Windows interface without a detour through Metro. And the familiar old Windows interface is no longer quite as familiar: Microsoft is doing away with its signature element, the Start button.

The RC gets released in a day or so, these links aren't working yet.

Yeah, I've seen this too, and I gotta say it doesn't thrill me.
"We've thought of life by analogy with a journey, with pilgrimage which had a serious purpose at the end, and the THING was to get to that end; success, or whatever it is, or maybe heaven after you're dead. But, we missed the point the whole way along; It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing, or dance, while the music was being played.

joeactor

I installed it on an old PC that's in the garage.

Boot time is phenomenal...

That being said, the user interface is a fractured mess.
Half the time you're running like a touch-screen tablet, the other half just defaults to running like the current version of windows.

... and if you have a mouse instead of a touch screen, things are not very intuitive.
(middle scroll wheel moves right and left - what?)

Touch-screen pc interfaces are interesting, but not that practical.
I can see everyone having a huge forearm from constantly reaching for the screen ;-)

Until they resolve some of these, I'll stick with Windows 7.

Asmodean

While I have both a big screen and a smaller touchscreen, I don't like Windows 8. It seems uglier, less practical and even more average-joe-oriented than 7.

Still, I prefer it to the other systems out there. Mac just can't cut it for me with my demands for software support and flexibility. Linux is... Linux and the others are... Well, not too good, really.

It sucks that Microsoft is in a downward spiral with regards to software (Although 7 is overall good), but until they cross a certain threshold, they will keep me as a customer.

I have no interest in it either. The metro interface should be OK for a table PC or smartphone, but I think that it looks totally misplaced on a desktop. For the moment I'm quite happy with Windows 7, so there is no reason at all for me to switch.

There will be a reason: whether we want to switch or not, support will eventually be withdrawn from the older versions; all new machines will be sold with Windows 8 and pretty soon ...
In other words - business as usual.

I've always wondered: does "<3" stand for breasts, butt, or heart?

I imagine ( , Y , ) for breasts, but what else?
