This is an excellent question, and one that's always bugged me.  If god is going to punish "the wicked" (whoever they might be), then why does man feel he must do so as well?  Is this a closet doubt in the religious mind shining through?  

So to paraphrase Steven Weinberg, what is really going on here is that the Christian community, instead of using their religion to say what is moral (like they claim they do), they are using their moral sense to decide what is religious. If that's the case then what's the point of the religion ?

Another excellent question.  At the very least it would appear that these people aren't getting their morals from the Bible after all.
