Hi people, how's it going?

I stumbled upon this forum while looking for somewhere to discuss questions related to atheism and theism.  Unfortunately, most of the places this discussion takes place are, to be polite, not exactly conducive to amicable yet rigorous discussion.  This appears to be an exception! :)  I'm a Christian (of a non-fundie persuasion), but under no illusions that I will change anyone's mind, or that anyone will change mine!  People don't tend to change their views over night, and especially not for purely intellectual reasons.  Rather, I'm here to be challenged by views other than my own, to understand and appreciate them a little better, and to come out myself with a more robust view of the world than when I started.  Sadly, there is not much of an arena for that sort of process in Real Life outside the internet.

That's enough of why I'm here; if you want to know anything about me (my least favourite subject :P) I could be persuaded to answer some more personal questions (given sufficient incentive of course ;)).

Hello and welcome to HAF, Matthaios.

We try, and I think we do a fair job of it. Here's a starter on getting to know this place, created by one of the admins of HAF:

QuoteNotes for new members from Tank.

The Rules.

Users who comply with forum rules will graduate to full membership after 10 posts. Till that time your ability to post is limited to the "Getting to Know You" section of the forum. It is our hope that this small restriction improves the overall atmosphere of HAF.

Some threads you might find interesting.
Where did you get your username from?
10 Things About Yourself
Tell us A Bit About Where You're From
Photography
Non-religious pet peeves
Pets...what do you have?
How to tell your family you are an atheist.*

*You will need 10 posts before you can add a post to this thread, but you can read it at any time.

Another thread that I think might prove interesting and perhaps useful to the members of HAF is "Rules for Conducting a Discussion" by Dr. Mortimer J. Adler

As for answering questions about yourself, one incentive is to graduate from the "Getting to Know You" section of the forum and gain access to the rest of the place.

I hope you enjoy your time reading and posting here.

Thanks for your welcome, Recusant!  I'll check out some of those links.

(BTW, the "10 posts" idea is a good 'un - there's hardly a troll in sight on the main forum.  Kudos!)

Yes I think it is an exception, there's some extraordinarily good people here and they lift others by their example.  The restraint exercised when faced by some complete freaken weirdoes is extraordinary.

Welcome

Hello, I've seen you on another forum.

Yeah - I had a go with another one but lost patience with it somewhat!

Good to hear - though the problem with hanging around with lots of decent, thoughtful people is that it makes it statistically much more likely that you're not one of them!

Welcome Matt (sorry couldn't resist)

We try not to let the more aggressive types rule here. You can settle in and ask any polite questions you like and expect to recieve polite responses. However we do have a lump of 'attack clay' called Asmodean that may chew on you occasionally. But as he has no teeth so this is a not altogether unpleasent experience.

Thanks for taking the time to sign up and join in.
