This is the kind of thing that made the newer Battlestar Galactica leap at my throat from the TV.  The writing team partly came from the ST writing team, and there are episodes and story threads that echo ST episodes taken to the next level.  BG did it's own version of the paranoid military trials of "The Drumhead" from TNG, and then they laid down the law and declared, "Expect the unexpected."  Plenty of people are killed, and new characters are introduced, regularly in an organic storytelling fashion.  The ship's hull get's blackened during a major battle halfway through the show, and it looks charred for the rest of the show!  It's like the writers took their pent up creative energies and opened up on everything they had to hold back on with their ST work.

I still love ST, just as it is.  Great stuff.
I love BG. I'm a picky bugger when it comes to a lot of things and only very rarly do I not find plot holes. BG was so plot hole free I stopped looking and just enjoyed it. Simple things like damping down sounds when in space. The way the ships manouver is also critical. Space craft don't bank to turn and when did a space craft in ST simple turn upwards (or downwards) an head off somewhere? You'd think space was 2 dimensional if you just watched ST.

Who likes Galaxy Quest? I do  :D

I'm currently wathing the new Star Trek movie on Netflix streaming. I saw it at the movies. But now I can catch all the fun things I missed the first time. Most notably the cheesy fight music and the sad poor red enson. He even had a red enson computer avatar. He was doomed from the get go.

Alan Rickman is just perfect for that roll.

Battlestar Galactica was a very excellent series and a good redux. Though I also have a soft spot in my heart for Dirk "The Faceman" "Starbuck" Benedict.

Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn, at the end when Kirk and Spock were talking about how Kahn may be smart but with his limited space flight experience, he's treating the battle as if it were 2 dimenstional. So Kirk pulled a 3 dimenstional maneuver and gained the upper hand.

I loved that movie, the Dalmations or Termites or whatever were a good example of non-human looking things (their real tentacled form). Tony Shalhoub's engineer character was my favourite, then Guy.

Also on topic: I liked all the Star Treks. Even though Voyager is at the bottom of my Star Trek list, it's still higher on my list than most shows. It shows an optimistic future for humanity (in spite of all the total destructions and wars that were narrowly avoided). I wasn't a fan of the idea that all the main aliens in TNG were all related genetically. I did like Q and the Borg. One thing that always irritated me was that flying ships into borg ships always did some major damage, yet they kept trying to modulate their beam frequencies so they could "FAAR MAH LAZORS!", instead of going with what worked (sending big heavy things into the Borg ships).

Were the aliens genetically related in TNG??  I did not know that. I only knew Romulons and Vulcans were.

Oh, did anyone ever see the NG ep where there was a planet runned by "god" who happened to be a giant floating machine? All the people were dressed in roman style tunics, and creepily overily jubilant??

Quite right. The scene was based on a film called 'The Enemy Below' a WWII drama with a US Destroyer hunting a German submarine.

The Chase - Season 6 Episode 20. After finding some codes in the life of various planets, the code reveals a recording where some ancient aliens said they seeded life on all the planets.

Edit: Also, TNG is currently on Netflix instant Q.

As was the episode, "Balance of Terror", from TOS season 1. I thought that was so cool when I saw it.

We need a BSG thread....I have questions...
The essence of the mind is not in what it thinks, but how it thinks. Faith is the surrender of our mind; of reason and our skepticism to put all our trust or faith in someone or something that has no good evidence of itself. That is a sinister thing to me. Of all the supposed virtues, faith is not.

The only ST I ever watched was Voyager, but I guess I watched the newer one when it first aired on TV (Enterprise I think?)
