Hi all,

I made sure to get permission from the administrator Whitney to post this thread. There is a serious lack of academic research on atheism and atheist online communities such as this one. To address this gap, I am conducting a study that would benefit greatly from the contribution of you guys. The study consists of an anonymous survey which should take you no longer than 10 minutes. The survey features questions about living as an atheist as well as questions about your participation in this forum.

I would be extremely grateful if you could complete the survey and I will definitely report back when the study is complete to let you guys know the results and conclusions. Additionally, if you have any questions for me, I would be glad to answer.

Here's the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MYPNTH6

Thanks everyone.

Some of those questions didn't really work for me because I am active is several online communities, all the others are no atheist communities.

That is why the questionnaire said "The following questions relate to the atheist online community you are a member of where this questionnaire was posted."

Too bad, I filled it out on another forum you posted this on, because my answers would vary depending on the forum.
Always question all authorities because the authority you don't question is the most dangerous... except me, never question me.

Whitney

i filled it out.

I found some of the questions hard to answer....like how much time I spend online a week; it was not clear if that meant total usage (email, netflix etc) or just using websites.

I also thought the question about friends was too general....there is a difference between online friends and friend friends even though someone could be both.

I consider all HAF members my lovers.  Just don't tell my wife.

Tried to do it. Sort of screwed it up I think as it appeared to go around the questions more than once and then I think I missed the last few :(

Done it.  So what the heck was that all about? ???

I felt it hard to predict what "most People" reactions would be or are. It'll be interesting to see these results from the atheist community. It makes me sad to think that there are people who feel completely buried or ostracized in their lack of faith. I know it's probably pretty bad here in certain parts of the US, those bible belt communities are deep and thick and seething..."If you are out there... if anyone is out there... I can provide food, I can provide shelter, I can provide security. If there's anybody out there... anybody... please. You are not alone."

I enjoyed the survey. I felt it was well done. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, and be sure to let us know how it goes.

Didn't really work for me either, because where I come from people are religously tolerant, actually people don't generally talk about religion or even know what religion others are. Its no big deal being an Atheist so I set Strongly Disagree to most of the questions.

I'd be very interested to see the overall results, are some people that repressed where they live?

Stevil makes a very valuable point in my opinion. Having hung around a number of theistic and atheistic fora it has become evident that where one lives really does effect how one would reply to the questionnaire. I live in England and generally religion is not a mainstream discussion topic. I have recently spent a year in college in Bradford which has a high proportion of Muslims of Pakistani origin and also from Bosnia. I came to have friends that were Muslims, not Muslim friends but friends that were Muslim. I thought of them as friends that just happened to have a different world view. They ranged from Admir a Muslim from Bosnia who had fought for his life, and that of his family, against Croatian Serbs. To another chap who was a Sufi Muslim who dressed and looked like a Taliban but was as nice a guy as you would meet anywhere. Then there were the three ladies in the class, two wore a head scarf, again all just normal people trying to get on in life. We didn't discuss our world views in detail, but I told them I was an atheist and they didn't change their attitude at all.

Context is so important to these pieces of research.

Took it. Too vague. Not sure what point will be made with it.
