Hello all, My name is Thom and I live in the buckle of the Bible belt. I have tried for many years to live the life that religion offers, but over the past few years, have begun to question many of the ideas and beliefs. I am a firm believer in science and mankind. The majority of the people in my area, seem to be confused as to what I mean, they just all nod and say, "ah, Athiest".

I didn't know what it meant to be an Athiest, but I researched it, and it seems to fit perfectly. I have given this many years of thought, and it's time to stop kidding myself. I hope that I can find a community here that I can get to know and find solace in. I'm swimming in a sea of fanatics and need some more like minded people.

Hope you have room for one more.  :)

Wow, that was a fast welcome. Way to make me feel at home lol.

I really look forward to getting into some serious discussion on the topic of Theist vs. Athiest. I have so many questions, but I'm sure I can be a valuable member if this forum, so thanks again.  :)

Welcome comrade!! I am new too. I have read some great discussions in this forum. Can't wait for the time to join one. I am not sure how I will get 50 posts in this part of the forum but I'll give it a shot. I hope 50 people join soon so I can greet them! :-)

lol, that's one way to get to the 50 I suppose.  :)

I agree with you. I have been pouring over post after post, and there are friendly, informative people here. I think it is nice that this place was made for people to kind of, get away for a while, and be with like minded individuals. Can't wait to read more.  :)

Hi Thom

Well it's good to see another person find their way out from under the comfort blanket of institutionalised superstition (aka religion). Welcome to HAF. I hope you find what you are looking for here.

Regards
Chris

Don't forget you can post in the Laid Back Lounge (LBL) and all the various threads in there.

Thanks Chris, I didn't know that I would post else where.

I've only just, truly, begun my journey, but I know I will meet people here to support me every step of the way.   :)

Yes, I would think you'll find a sympathetic atmosphere here as many of the membership have been through a version of what has happened to you. Personally I have never believed in the supernatural so I always find the de-conversion stories I read here fascinating, profoundly shocking and inspiring.

There are some members here who are, as yet, still held in the thrall of institutionalised superstition. Try not to let them get you down.

I wouldn't say that I'm superstitious really. I have my own beliefs, no.. theories, as to why things in the world happen, and non of them revolve around deities, that's for sure, lol. Everything happens for a reason, but it's based in science, not in religious beliefs.

An example being, I think there are ghosts, as I have seen some. Do I think these are spirits of people that have died? Absolutely not. Nothing is certain, but I think that when someone see's a ghost, what is actually happening is they are witnessing a time warp of sorts. Actually seeing the past, and in stronger instances, even able to interact to a point. So on our end, a window into the past, and on the 'ghosts' end, a window into the future. There is so much about time we don't understand yet, I really think this is a possibility.

Anyway, I said all this so you can get a feel for how I think. I am very scientific minded and I need proof before I commit to an idea. If not proof, then viable evidence that is grounded in reality.

And to xSilverPhinx, I guess that one went over my head, but thanks for the welcome.  :D

I hope I hit them soon too.

I wonder if the boom in new members had anything to do with the failed Doomsday?   :D

Lol, who knows? I look forward to the fail of Oct 21, 2011 and Dec 2012.
