Toward Computers That Fit on a Pen Tip: New Technologies Usher in the Millimeter-Scale Computing Era

ScienceDaily (Feb. 22, 2011) â€" A prototype implantable eye pressure monitor for glaucoma patients is believed to contain the first complete millimeter-scale computing system.

And a compact radio that needs no tuning to find the right frequency could be a key enabler to organizing millimeter-scale systems into wireless sensor networks. These networks could one day track pollution, monitor structural integrity, perform surveillance, or make virtually any object smart and trackable.

Both developments at the University of Michigan are significant milestones in the march toward millimeter-scale computing, believed to be the next electronics frontier...

I have witnessed a tendency in my lifetime to exploit technology at the expense of privacy and civil liberties. I don't see this trend being reversed any time soon. Big Government paranoia combined with virtually microscopic surveillance technology does worry me. Technology is neither good nor bad but can be exploited as dictated by the exploiter.

I'm in the middle of the book "The Master Switch" - it's amazing the amount of technology, surveillance, and interaction between mega-corps and the gub-ment.  Maybe in the future we'll all carry personal digital shielding to circumvent this type of behavior...  But I'm afraid like most things, the sheeple will just get used to it and accept it as the norm.

Me, I'm waiting for the cybernetic optical implants myself. Ever watch Ghost in the Shell on TV? I'd love to be able to browse the internet just by thinking about it.

The government says, in regards to encroaching upon our privacy, "Nothing to hide, nothing to fear."

It should be turned around on them, however, with "No legitimate reason to know, no legitimate reason to ask."
