I think it would be very hard to argue that TBA is harder and heavier than The Razor's Edge or Black Ice or Use Your Illusion I or II or The Spaghetti Incident. It is a little more complex than Hard Rock generally is, has a bit of Metal like structure to the composition though, but still simpler and more of a rock feel to it than Heavy Metal.

When TBA came out a large portion of Metallica fans came from the Hard Rock Scene. Lets face it, Hard Rock has always been generally more accessible to the public than Heavy Metal. I think it was great that Metallica were able to capture a new audience with TBA and then introduce them to Heavy Metal via their back catalogue, but a bit disappointing for myself that they stopped playing Thrash or even Metal. But no big deal, as there are many other great metal bands to carry the flag and produce great new metal for me to listen to.

But anyway, useless us arguing about the genre as there is certainly no clear definition of what is metal and what is hard rock. I have the lines drawn in my head and likely they are different from yours.

I tend to like different versions of songs, but that was pretty terrible. Pretty sure they would be booed off the stage if they did that.
