Special interests: Theology (especially OT), philosophy (metaphysics, divine simplicity, aretaic ethics, epistemology, linguistics), biblical Greek and Hebrew. "Normal people" interests: Family, writing, guitar, politics . . . I'll add to the list if I think of anything else.

Sophus asked me not to bother him, and I tried not to. Others enjoyed wrestling with him, I don't imagine he would have spent his time making 50 posts so he could start posting about his true interests.  Maybe exceptions will be necessary.

Keep in mind the purpose of this area is to weed out the trolls before they shit all over the place.

I don't think just posting a bunch of random stuff is going to allow us to spot them in time.

Well, I'm not just saying they should type "fjdlaksdjfklasjdfklasjdf" and submit a post. I just mean that they can post about random, non-serious topics until they reach the number of required posts here (which is pretty much all anyone can do in the Laid Back Lounge).

Well, then yes I agree.

That's why I allowed them access to the lounge.

The theory is that by saving debate for later that when the person is released to the rest of the boards the debates will actually be constructive because we all know each other a bit better and have already gotten past worrying about if someone is trolling or not.

And if they jump into troll mode once released yet were fine in here we can try restricting them again...it gives an option aside from banning for those special cases were the person seems ok but just shouldn't be trying to debate yet because they seem like a troll.

It's undoubtedly a lot easier for non mods to ignore or sidestep the crap.

Yeah, let's not encourage posting for the sake of hitting 50 posts. That can only go badly, plus it leads to more work for the moderating staff. Seriously, let's just not do that.

Ok, came up with a solution.

Newly registered users are restricted to the "Getting to know you" section of the forum (yes it is new) until they hit 50 posts.

That will give us time to catch the more obvious trolls  and restrict the access of those who we suspect of trolling before they derail huge masses of the forum

Ideally this will mean users won't even discuss debateable topics till after they hit 50 points...going to figure out that one as we go along because I can't create a rule against debate in that area since we also don't allow preaching.
