Idk you're the one attaching meanings to it, you tell me
I believe to understand Augustine

Einstein - You can talk about the ethical foundation of science, but you can't talk about the scientific foundation of ethics

C.S. Lewis

If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning. If there were no light in the universe, thus no creatures

LegendarySandwich

Who here has said that life has no meaning at all?

Quote from: "Whitney"Generally, there is no purpose.
Biologically, the 'purpose' of life is to survive.
Personally, the 'purpose' of life is to enjoy it.

I would like to highlight that first line

you don't get the point of the question.

regardless of if the cookie has meaning or not that doesn't take away from your ability to enjoy it.

I'm pretty sure Whitney is on the same side of this issue as I am -- there is no objective, ultimate purpose to life. However, there obviously is subjective purpose, which all of attach to it.

Whitney said there is no purpose

so what? I very obviously stated that I make up my own purpose.

And even if I didn't...again, so what?

There is no need to have some grand goal in order to enjoy existing.

I got the point, you want to try and make a small philosophical statement and then expanding it to a worldview,
either way you enjoying the cookie is meaningless
I believe to understand Augustine

You're missing the point...again. Whitney just asked why enjoying the cookie has to have meaning. Isn't it enough that it's enjoyable? Who the fuck cares if there's no meaning to it?

No i see the point, you're saying its because of the meanings we attach to it that make it enjoyable.  So first for something to be enjoyable you have to have someone enjoying it.  If someone is able to enjoy something, he or she must assume that there is intrinsic value within themselves that they need or desire something special to then enjoy.  So if you are gonna make that assumption, you cannot have a worldview which principally states that there is no meaning for this illustrations makes the assumption that the figure doing the enjoying, has value on which he can enjoy something simple as a cookie to fulfill some worth that is intrinsic

Uh, no, I'm saying that enjoyment and meaning are unrelated. You can enjoy something without it having meaning, and vice-versa.

QuoteSo first for something to be enjoyable you have to have someone enjoying it.
Well, yeah, that's pretty simple logic.

QuoteIf someone is able to enjoy something, he or she must assume that there is intrinsic value within themselves that they need or desire something special to then enjoy.
Uh, no.

QuoteSo if you are gonna make that assumption,
Which I don't.

But doesn't that defeat the purpose of what enjoying really means?

Glad we agree, now we can be friends

Quote
QuoteIf someone is able to enjoy something, he or she must assume that there is intrinsic value within themselves that they need or desire something special to then enjoy.
Uh, no.

If someone, in themselves have no meaning attached to them, how can they 1. find meaning, even so much as subjective meaning 2. find pleasure, for the essence of enjoying something is to indulge in something meaningful that reiterates the meaning that is already intrinsically within them.  That's a tough one, think about it

Quote
QuoteSo if you are gonna make that assumption,
Which I don't.

It's unspoken, you're assuming that even as you speak, that what you have to say is meaningful, how can you do something meaningful if you yourself have no meaning

Why would it?

QuoteIf someone, in themselves have no meaning attached to them, how can they 1. find meaning, even so much as subjective meaning
Why would a person have to have attached meaning to themselves to find meaning in other things?

Quote2. find pleasure, for the essence of enjoying something is to indulge in something meaningful that reiterates the meaning that is already intrinsically within them.  That's a tough one, think about it
No, it isn't. You're just making up definitions now.

QuoteIt's unspoken, you're assuming that even as you speak, that what you have to say is meaningful,
Not necessarily.

Quotehow can you do something meaningful if you yourself have no meaning
First, my assumption that I'm doing something meaningful would have to be correct. Second, I don't see how I wouldn't be able to do something meaningful if I myself didn't have meaning. Third, what do you define as "meaning"?
