I have just recently graduated from UGA and am currently seeking a career in financial planning. I have a big interview next Wednesday with Massmutual Piedmont Financial group! Wish me luck everyone. ;D
Eventually I'd like to start taking seminary. And perhaps in my twilight years, possibly become a pastor! That would be pretty cool!

For now, just freelance stuff. I don't have a fixed job.
I also don't have a resumé I can put anything impressive on, at least not anything that won't make me look crazy. I'm at a standstill. I haven't even finished college.
(Just the rants of someone going though a quarter-life crisis :( )
I've been a civil servant working for the Navy most of my life -- looking forward to retiring in a couple of years when I can do things I actually want to do.
I work at a lawyer's office

I'm a teacher and it makes me profoundly happy and fulfilled. I don't make a lot of money, but I've always been happy with enough to get by.
I'm just starting university. Studying Social Work, so I'm a trainee social worker.
I work for a large security company.
I work primarily in securing international ships and harbour terminals.
And I freelance as a ninja.
I'm a veterinary receptionist/assistant. I have a BA in History and I have no idea how I ended up doing this, but I really enjoy it. Next fall I plan to go back to school to study to become a vet tech. Ideally, I think I'd like to be a veterinary lab tech, because I think that'd be really interesting.
In short, I like da animals.

That's really cool. When I was young, one of the first jobs I started thinking seriously about was being a vet. I eventually decided not to in part because I decided I couldn't perform a surgery after watching a vet cut open a dog. That was in India, where they didn't care much about as many people (unsterilized) being in the same room where a surgery was happening.
I'm retired now. I'm not very healthy, but I manage to give a lot of my time to a charity (http://www.echoherefordshire.btck.co.uk/) which provides activities for people with learning difficulties. I do a lot of photography for them, some teaching and a great deal of just sitting around and socialising - that's the most valuable part, really.

Master of my own destiny - I own a surveyors practice... and sometimes do some work when not playing in forums (fora??).
It'd be an easy life if I werent such a slave to a stuttering (UK) economy...
I am a group manager for a Window/Door manufacturing company. I started in the door division for four years, and have since transferred to a window plant in a different area of the state. My crew of 26 people produce between 400-700 vinyl windows per day. There's nothing special about the process... build the frame, build the vent, add the glass, put stickers on it as labeling.
I make a decent wage, and before the US recession (especially crushed the housing market) there was incredible opportunity for bonus and incentive, but that has since been yanked. I am bored out of my mind at work, usually, as the only issue that ever really comes up is absenteeism and machine breakdowns. Those are pretty easy to fix.
I have the largest department by floor space, number of employees and windows produced. I run all of the stock sizes and standard orders. Everything "special" goes down other production lines. I have started to realize that my job isn't so much to manage the department, but to keep the my 26 employees (about 25% of the total employees at the plant) out of the hair of upper management.
If my plant is still here next year, I'll probably be doing the same thing. There was recently a Canadian investment company looking to purchase a majority share of our company, there was bankruptcy talk, and most concerning was the old man that started the company in the 50s kicked the bucket earlier this year, and his son is running the company like he has no long term interest in it.

I've been a few different things including a horse-trainer, freelance writer and middle-school science teacher, but I now teach at a community college. I do this only very part time since I have two little girls that demand a lot of love and attention. I teach college prep (read: remedial) Reading and English to a diverse array of adult students. It is by far my favorite job so far, maybe because I only do it part time, or maybe because compared to middle schoolers, adult students are generally much more respectful and committed to their education.

I think they are both enjoyable forms of media. Words are uniquely expressive in an interpretative kind of way, but there's something to be said about the immediacy of images. Personally, I like graphic novels more than traditional comics because I think they combine the best of both worlds. There are some very well written graphic novels out there that I don't think would have the same punch if they were traditional novels.
They can also be a bit more versatile - "Lost Girls" by Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie, for instance, is a graphic novel that attempts to fuse pornography, with a narrative, with allegory, with art. Every page has a lot of layers, in a lot ways, and I think it'd be almost impossible to convey the same sort of things with words alone.

Yeah, Archie McPhee had a yodeling contest. I was already a singer, so I went to YodelCourse.com and took their 10 free lessons. Next thing I knew, I was a yodeling toy, and knee-deep in rubber chickens (that was the pay for the gig). I don't even have a job. Even though I really want one so I can pay my parents back for community college (this isn't something they ask for, it's something I feel is right to do) and become independent. Independent enough to at least start paying for myself anyway.
Otherwise, I'm a music student. I have an Associate's from community college. Probably doesn't mean much of anything, but for me personally it does.
I want to go into Instrumental Music Education and become a band director. Teaching Music History would be fun as well, but I don't think they have Music History courses at high school level (or below, of course). So it's an either or thing. I thought I was so sure about becoming a band director, but now I don't know... I'm such a mess.
For now, I just want a job working at a musical instrument store so I can get money (and more instruments.) :P.

General Education Development (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Educational_Development). Pretty much a way to test if a person has a highschool level education... high school is before university.
Thanks for the details about the GED :)
Yeah, I've more or less self educated myself since I was 6 and should have graduated a while ago. In my specific area they don't believe in skipping grades though, so I dropped out and am now working on my GED, which will allow me to do anything a high school diploma would except go to a 4 year university. Which I can do if I take two courses of a foreign language, at least that's what the person I talked to in the office staff said before I dropped out, only in a much more negative tone.

Automation of system administration tasks. I write scripts that will automatically run a multistep task like shutting down the switchport of a particular server without having to know which switch or switchport it's on. I've also written plugins for a monitoring system called Nagios to monitor servers and switches for issues and performance over time.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.
I am also not a pussy.
I believe you have my stapler.
ROFL I love that movie.

Nice. Freelance, or your own business?

So that's what I've been doing wrong! I've been making wild speculations about current events for free all this time!

Alas, no. :( They expelled me for being too young and dishonourable.

It helps if you have an accomplice to distract them, and if you have nimble fingers.
I'm currently finishing high school. Not planning on going to college at the moment, and if I do it will just be a Tech school

No worries! I expect you and Big Asmo will be too busy taking over the world... :D
'Sides, Big Asmo is acumulating enough degrees for three people. :P
Sounds like a plan
I graduated with a B.S. in Biology, back in 2004, and am currently a Medical Technologist working in a small hospital. What did you major in(or plan on) and what do you do for a living? I'd LOVE to see how diverse we really ARE!!!
I want to do Cosmotology and Zoology. Only a matter of time til I combine the two and run a pet salon. :)
I'm sure there's a "What do you do for a living" thread somewhere, but I couldn't find it.
Anyhoo, I have a BA with a major in History and a minor in Sociology. Since I graduated I spent most of my time being employed as a Veterinary Assistant/Receptionist. I'm now going back to school doing a post-graduate Technical Writing program, which I really like so far. If I could get a job in Communications/Documentation/Writing, I would be very happy. That's the ultimate plan.
So, I'm, um, "well-rounded"?
I'm glad I took some time to figure out what I really wanted to do, though.
bump

Good ol' Tank, I figured you'd find it.

Thanks for the reminder.
I'm back in school, learning a new skill, as a fail safe after doing menial labor for a few years. I'm also learning HTML coding and plan to attempt to learn the coding required for Apple Apps, seeing as my wife had a great idea for one. We may simply have to pay someone with the knowledge to build it for us though, because that shit looks really daunting. HTML and CSS seem much easier to learn than the coding Apple requires.
ShaBAM!!
You're good, Tank.

I'm not sure how much Tank get's paid, but I think it is probably too low given his level of competency. This forum is better moderated than most other's I have been too. Not to mention most of the other forums have about 3 moderators working at once, with not much extra traffic.

We all do it for the love :D
This forum is good because Whitney is quite happy to root out trolls etc, very quickly and all the other staff follow that example. We also do our best to stop flame wars starting in the first place. This has two effects A) it stops the flame war quickly and B) irritates the would-be fire starter who usually leaves without needing to be banned.
The other contributory factor is our mature membership doesn't rise to trolling very much which make moderation much, much easier.

I agree. Tank is doing a great job. This forum runs slow sometims, but well. The trolls are weeded out, and the rules are enforced very well.
Also, all the members that have stuck around are really cool. :D
And we have the Asmo. No other forum has that.

A very good thing, too. Too much Asmo might implode the internet.

Indeed. Oh, an Asmominion has occasionally been spotted on various programming forums, but that's different.

Infiltrators?
I need to add "Photographer" to my list of things, since I actually made some decent money with it over the past four years. It's part time, and only pays for itself and some pizza nights, but since I do have credentials and get paid regularly (for sports photos, at least), I'm putting it on the list. ;D
