Title: Tattoos
Post by: xSilverPhinx on May 26, 2019, 03:44:38 PM
I know there's an older thread on tattoos here but decided to start a new one.  :D

-~-

So I got a couple of tattoos on my shoulder yesterday. Brain-related, of course.  ;D

A neuron (front):

I asked the tattoo artist to design something that did not look like it was taken out of a textbook. I don't consider myself to be a textbook so... :P

Hieroglyphs (shoulder blade):

(No, it's not anyone's name. ;) )

This I got from a textbook (specifically's Kandel's 'Principles of Neuroscience') where there's an image of the oldest written record of the word 'brain', taken from an Egyptian papyrus dating back some 3000 years or so. These hieroglyphs are that word.   8)

I thought the idea was awesome and fell in love with it instantly.

-~-

What about you? Got any? Would like to get any? Talk about them here!

Nothing is showing up. A bold choice...

I don't have any and don't think they would suit me very well. The men in my family are EXTREMELY hairy, so not only would I have to shave to get a tattoo but it would quickly be covered up unless it was on my wrist, ankle, or face.

Those are nice xSilverPhinx.  :tellmemore:

I don't have any but I think one day I'll get me one or two or fifteen of them.  :smilenod:

Now that the images are showing up that neuron is very nicely done. The level of detail is much better than what you typically see.

I have 17.

5 on my left arm.
5 on my right arm.
3 on my back.
2 on my chest.
1 on my right leg.
1 on the left side of my neck.

 I'm already thinking about what to get next. Why stop at two or fifteen? When I was an undergrad I really wanted this:

Taken from Charles Darwin's notebook, it's a genealogical tree in which all branches are connected to a common ancestor. I like that he wrote 'I think' next to it, like the idea is still evolving itself in his mind. An extremely powerful image.

Yes, I love it

It looks a bit like a mix between a neuron and an astrocyte, but I thought it was very interesting.

You have two sleeves? Half sleeves? Or are they more like isolated tattoos?

Paw prints would be cool. Maybe a dog of some sort. Possibly a stylized bear. No wait, two teddy bears cuddling, just to mess with people who get to see it!

Do you have Aquaphor in Brazil? That's what everyone here uses on tattoos. I'm convinced it's mostly petroleum jelly but it supposedly has additives that make it more effective.

Yes, we do. I think I'll get some and see if it helps. The tattoo artist recommended putting healing lotion on the tattoos to speed up the process and so far I think it's working. The skin isn't red or irritated, just itchy.

Vitamin E cream should work as well.

I wash mine, then use Aquaphor and tape it up in plastic wrap for about two weeks. Then I use some lotion to keep it moisturized for a few weeks after.

I don't have tattoos yet, but once it's healed make sure you use sunscreen! UV is a big cause of tattoo fading so protecting it will keep the ink nice longer.

I tried taping them up in plastic wrap but it didn't stick. :P I kept that on for only about an hour before getting frustrated and taking it off.  ::)

Do you have thick cloth tape? That's what I use, it's about 4cm wide. Also, it's not clear in what I wrote, but I washed them daily, I just do that for about two weeks.

Another option, is there are some plastic things made specifically for tattoos that are supposed to be able to last the whole time. I was only able to get it to last about five days then the second one I put on barely lasted a day, so I went back to plastic wrap and tape.

I think a regular old bandage is fine too, it's just that the tattoos I got were too big for those.

Yes, I have cloth tape, but I don't know, it kept rubbing against my skin and just didn't stick. I wore a loose shirt and removed the plastic wrap and it feels way more comfortable. No pain whatsoever and even the itching is starting to subside.

Next tattoo I get I can try buying a new cloth tape, maybe that stuff is way past its validity period. ::)

I just feel it should breathe.

That guy that did mine had some good work, he normally did photo real stuff. He was also from Texas, but was in town for a tattoo conventions. That one took 12 hours, all in one sitting. Well with a break for dinner. It was done all in black with some white highlights.

Not really, I liked the design because of the skull and the cat with bat wings. Enough to have it stabbed into my skin. The crow has more significant meaning, because of how much I was (and am) inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's works.

I'm thinking of getting this symbol tattooed on my arm, next to the other two:

It has a number of meanings I like, the main one being the Gestalt law of closure (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principles_of_grouping#Closure) in visual perception:

QuoteThe principle of closure refers to the mind's tendency to see complete figures or forms even if a picture is incomplete, partially hidden by other objects, or if part of the information needed to make a complete picture in our minds is missing. For example, if part of a shape's border is missing people still tend to see the shape as completely enclosed by the border and ignore the gaps. This reaction stems from our mind's natural tendency to recognize patterns that are familiar to us and thus fill in any information that may be missing.

It's an abstract representation but I want to get this tattooed as a reminder to stay humble because our brains fill in a lot of gaps in information, not all which might be correct.

It's also the symbol for uppercase Delta, one signifying 'change' in some disciplines.

And last but not least, the triangle pointing upward looks like such a powerfully resilient shape with its broad base, like no mere breeze can topple it over.

Seems a pity to dedicate a part of your body to a design that's gonna look stunning for a couple of years, then a smudged blur for the rest of your life. There appears to be a market for it though...

I mean don't put the silhouette of an evil Kat on your body, but rather how about a silhouette tattoo of a cool monkey or gorilla? For color you give it green eyes!

I'm really digging Sak Yant tattoo designs right now. Still too damn fuzzy to get any... *Sigh*
Had to google that. They do look stunning. But they're such intricate designs - how do they look after a couple of years once they've bled a little?

Probably about the same as any other tattoo!
Seems a pity to dedicate a part of your body to a design that's gonna look stunning for a couple of years, then a smudged blur for the rest of your life. There appears to be a market for it though...

I thought about that before I got my neuron tattoo, but figured if it becomes too smudged with time I'll cover it with a neuron silhouette.

When I was a teenager I really wanted a barcode tattoo but was persuaded by a tattoo artist not to get one because it would smudge and become a weird-looking rectangle. Good thing I listened! ;D

:notsure: A QRCode, though...

Nah, nevermind.  :P

I really would like to remove, or at least thin out my body hair. It's not very comfortable, and probably not attractive. All solutions seem too temporary though. Tattoos will have to await new skin...

I think a less temporary solution would be laser removal, but as far as I know it requires quite a few sessions and is quite pricey. Maybe hair removal cream? Hair grows quickly again but cream has its perks: no razor or wax involved.

I think you should prioritise the all over laser dehairing, get it done, no excuses.
Then the fates will share a giggle, you'll meet your dream girl and she'll know your her soul mate and you'll be so happy for six weeks.
Ye I checked the internet and I couldn't confirm that tink=hairless and bear=hairy but Crow said something so just go with it.
Then she'll see a bear and she'll wish you could fullfill that bit of her need that a tink just can't, you're so perfect 'cept for that and she'll leave 'cause evolution made her, but she won't be happy, you can't take comfort in that, (or maybe you can if you're a Siz like bastard,) she'll spend the rest of her life trying to find her perfect match that you'd of been if only you hadn't given in to a body conformity fad.

Snip giggle giggle giggle.

They are. Symbols representing Siz, Mrs Siz and two Sizzlets.

I've wanted another for years, but can't decide on a theme. Something watery, chaotic, futuristic or satanic perhaps. I love biomech tats, but they have to be done right to be be any good.

Soon after having this done, I had the odd memory of a symbol that appeared to me in a trippy/stoned vision many years before. At the time it felt like I'd witnessed something like a formula for the meaning of life. In hindsight I realised that this tattoo was very similar to what I had seen in my trippy vision (though beyond a general idea of a symbolic 'formula' I could never describe it verbally)
To this day I wonder if the tattoo was a subconscious reconstruction of the 'vision', or just a coincidence. Or, perhaps a function of being naturally drawn to this kind of graphic, which has manifested in these two ways???

Or, in the twighlight zone of my mind-expanded vision, it was a premonition....
(yeah, no!)

That's interesting. I get a lot of ideas for tattoo designs in dreams, and as I dream I really want them on my skin but when I wake up I realise it was mostly just unbridled impulsivity and that I don't actually want them that much.

So I've been thinking about my next tattoo and leaning towards a cyberpunk Cthulhu on my left shoulder and down my arm.

That sounds interesting, black and white?

That's a cool idea. But if you go for that, how would you go about finding a design?
Is that something you could do yourself? Find an image online? Or sit down with the artist?

I'm thinking so, but until I talk to the artist nothing is set. Also, I need to find one whose work is something I want to have for it.

For tattoos, if it's not a very specific image, I think it's important to find an artist that has a style that you want for the tattoo, and rely on them to draw it up in their style. So when I find an artist that has a style that I like for this, I'll probably bring in some sample images and talk to them. Then they'll draw up a sketch and we'll make changes if needed.

Sounds sensible to me. Keep us posted.

I think it's a shame when people grab something off-the-shelf or scabbed from online and have a practitioner slap it on. It's gotta be unique and personal. IMHO.

I used the internet to get an idea of what I wanted for my tattoo. I gave my artist the pictures I liked and what I had in mind, then she did a few designs and I picked the one I liked most.

I don't know, I also want the symbol for Samus from Super Metroid, and there isn't much to do about that than just grab it from the internet.

So for me, I think it depends on the context of the image.
