What is more adorable than a rat with it's own teddy bear?
You do realise the photographer put a little smear of pâté on the teddy's head and the rat is licking it off.
And Santa doesn't exist. Hush, you!

I agree Pudding, I quite like giant tortoises. One bit my foot 2 summers ago. He didn't mean to though, I was the dolt standing right where he was eating grass. He was named Methuselah, and he was 130 years old! He died shortly thereafter. I hope it wasn't my foot that did him in.

The tiny tawny owl chicks burrow in under the fluffy toy's wings to keep warm after they were separated from their own mothers.
The chicks, all aged between just four and eight weeks, faced certain death as they fended for themselves alone in the wild but are now recovering in an animal hospital.

It could happen. I lived with a cat once who was a superb hunter -- saw her leap 5 feet into the air from a standing start to take out a pigeon -- who was outdone by a little rabbit. She'd snuck up on it from behind when it suddenly turned around and licked her on the nose. You never saw a cat look so startled and the rabbit hopped off unharmed because, really, how do you kill someone right after it kisses you? It's not exactly the Asmo Way, but I figure whatever works.

You would be surprised about how strong these little guys are. I remember taking one of the farms younger colts in a parade when he spooked halfway through. It took me, my mother, and three full grown men to hold back this little horse that wasn't even full grown.
A little friend of mine who I used to hang out with and feed. I'd plunk down on the steps next to the wall, and he'd come out and say hello, and ask for his peanuts or cereal.

What kind of psycho exposes that much bare flesh while bathing a cat? I remember my cat taking a pound of flesh the couple of times I had to bathe her.
Well, that cat doesn't seem to offer much resistance - just poses for "U scard me fur laif" demotivator.

There is the occasional cat who tolerates baths without causing bloodshed. There are also the very rare cats who like them. The one in the picture would seem to be one of the ones who tolerate them without bloodshed. But you'd better be darned sure before exposing that much flesh. :o

Horses are, in my opinion, the easiest animals to read. Their ears do all the talking. Ears up means alert, ears to the side is a sign that they are relaxed, and ears flat back is fear or discomfort.

Meh, Arabians are nice, but every Thoroughbred I have ever met has had an ugly head. There is a certain build to Fjords that make them sturdy and cute. Pluse you can put hearts in their mane.

Nah, Przewalski's horse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Przewalski's_horse) has got an ugly head, Thoroughbreds are built for speed so I sort of overlook that a bit. If I'm not mistaken, Arabians are some of their ancestors...

Arabian mare with her foal. All arab's heads are the same, they're the most recognizable breed out there IMO.
Arabs are beautiful. Przewalski's horses are cool. They are also very closely related to Fjords. If we are going for ugliest head though, Lipizzaners have my vote. I hate the Roman nose on some of them. Of course, every breed has good and bad horses. Many of the one around here are the poorly bred versions. And another fjord foal, just because.

I do love the look of most Arabians. Not all are exactly the same, though - Egyptian lines tend to have more extreme, delicate, dishy heads with a more pronounced jibbah (forehead bulge), for example.
Also, I want to get a Fjord now - just so I can scissor hearts into its mane.

Funny I was just looking up Lipizzaners! :D I had always associated them with Austria but apparently they're not an Austrian breed, just the most common for those fancy shows they put them through.
That foal is cute, but then again nearly all baby animals are cute. :D

I'm assuming they're also the ones with the more upturned noses/snouts? :D Okay, I shouldn't have said that all their heads are the same, but they're all still very recognizable though, even with the slight variations. I can't say the same for many other horse breeds, many of them look the same to me.

It's crazy what selective breeding can do to a breed. Especially a breed like the Quarter horse. I usually put them in about three categories:
Halter

Racing and ranch work. That first one isn't even fit to ride. His hooves are too small for relative body mass and he has too much muscle.

Well, no. First, there was The Asmo. And then He created evolution and a fish. He then commanded evolution to sleep with the fish and a primitive fish-Asmo was born. Millions of years later... Ratties.
Don't you know your Asmogenesis?! >:(

Squirrels are cute little guys...and girls. They are incredibly clever too. They have found ways to raid my bird feeder no matter how I try to defeat them. I keep a feeder with sunflower seeds and my resident cardinals visit often. The crafty little squirrels will empty the feeder in a New York Instant.
My little Australian shepherd, Charlie, did not allow squirrels into his yard,. Charlie has gone to the Rainbow Bridge now. Scoot the only remaining Aussie has no interest in those crafty little rodents. I have taken to greasing the pole to0 which the bird feeder is attached. That pisses the squirrels off because they can not climb the pole with their usual skill. I furnish other goodies for the squirrels, like peanuts, remote from the bird thingy. Little bastards still try to climb the pole.
The freaken squirrels are a menace. I have two pecan trees. The furry little demons strip the trees of the nuts well before any of the nuts have matured to a point of being ripe enough to use or enjoy. Just the same I enjoy the little dudes. They are incredibly clever, athletic, and cute.

Mags, witch that she is hacked into my computer and stole my baby pic :D
I was actually pretty cute as a baby wasn't I? But see how my left ear is sort of pinched and hangs a bit? That's from those evil, horrible nuns from catholic school grabbing at it with their dry, scaly, nasty, dirty fingers, and yanking the fuck out of it. (You should see how huge my lobes are now because of that)
By the way Mags, except for the theft of my baby pic, I consider you a really, really "Good Witch". Super nice, and stuff (Like my bestest friend in the whole world after Kahlua).

It's like Valentine's Day 1995 all over again.
So I searched the internet for Valentine's Day 1995, and found nothing, even when broadening my search to include England and Lancashire. Again nothing...
(Only thing I found bad that happened that day was some sort of security breach associated with Scientology)
Sooooo...???

Your eminence, I can't swim. :shifty:
I took a class in high school, the semester ended, the teacher pushed me into the swimming pool, maybe she also suspected that I was a witch. :shifty: Anyways, I was drowning, she told another kid to pull me out of the water. I think to avoid a lawsuit she passed me. :headscratch:
Anyways, no Sir, I can't swim.
If somebody was to set fire to you would you burn?
I don't know. Let me go burn myself a few times. I'll be right back....
I want to provide you with independently verifiable tests to prove that I do burn.
I'm gonna have to burn myself many times to make sure I get the same results each time.
If I do burn, I'm gonna have to take a few days to heal and then repeat the procedure.

Very cute, those. When viewed from sufficient distance.
This cute bunny has been hanging out in my backyard lately. I think it is a she, so I'm calling her Agnes.
Last night I was in the yard with the Kahlua just before going for a walk when I noticed Agnes simply sitting in the middle of the yard, we had both walked right by her. Fortunately Kahlua is blind as fuck so he didn't notice her right away. I was able to get a hold of his leash just as he did noticed her and was starting to lunge toward her.
Bunnies in the neighborhood are smart, many times Kahlua and I are walking at night and we go right by them on the sidewalk, even if he sees them he's on the leash so he doesn't bother trying to go after them, and they seem to know that, because they'll just let us walk right by.
Anyway they're too fast for him, couple times he has gone after them they easily get away.
Today I saw Agnes by the gate so I stopped to have a chat, and she came over and got really close to me.
So I took these pictures.
Just after taking them she came up right next to me, close enough that I could have petted her if i wanted to (She has beautiful eyes), she paused looked up at me, and then hopped away into the bushes, but she is very gentle and trusting.
I think she might be pregnant, but not wanting to be rude I didn't ask.

That rabbit is either an escaped pet or ill. A fit wild rabbit would not be on its own, it would have run off at the first sign of a dog and would not have let you take any photos of it. It doesn't look ill to me.

It's wild, we have lots of rabbits in the neighborhood, however. They act more like squirrels than the more wild type of rabbits you're thinking of...often times they sit on the grass just staring out toward the house, one does it so often on my neighbors lawn that in the morning I always say hello and good morning to it.
Visitors to our house are often surprised how unafraid they are. (One of my neighbors feeds them)

^ I totally lost on that one!
Awwwww, the sleepy baby and his teddy!
I lose because the squirrels regularly defeat me. I have a bird feeder in my back yard that a lot of happy birds make use of. There are a regular pair of cardinals, some finches, numerous unidentified other breeds ( I am not a knowledgeable birder)and a gorgeous red headed woodpecker who ignores the seeds but gorges himself on the suet block.
The feeder is mounted on a pole with a crossbar at about six and a half feet high. There is a concrete wall about 8 feet away from the pole. The wall is eight feet high. The damned little squirrels have trained themselves to jump from the wall to the crossbar, there to hang upside down from the bar to gain gluttonous access to all those delicious sunflower seeds.
The sunflower seeds disappear at an alarming rate that is frustrating to both the birds and me. I have witnessed the clever little devils doing the dangerous flight from the wall to the feeder crossbar. Amazing. I am annoyed by the furry little thieves but I have the greatest admiration for their determination and athletic ability.

Added: years ago one of my many pastimes was doing maintenance work for a wild-life rescue centre. Inevitably I got involved with the "clients". One job was helping baby hedgehogs to pee, mum normally licks the appropriate part of their anatomy to stimulate.
We used, very gently, a cotton bud dipped in warm water to "tickle". I only got to help the little boys, little girl hedgehogs need an expert!
I also got to wear three baby bats, hanging inside my sweater to keep them warm, whilst their home made incubator was fixed.

However, that's not labneh on the plate, but "Cloud Eggs"...I whip the egg whites like you would to make meringue, then bake for about 3 minutes at 450, I then remove from oven, add the egg yoke, and then bake another 3 minutes or so. I topped them off with some fired peppers and onions.
And you called the puppy a pig, if you knew it was a puppy why'd ya call it a pig??

Yup!
But like banana fritters, it's the batter on the outside that protects the banana and prevents it becoming just a mess in the deep fat frier. I tried grilling one once, ended up with a puddle of goo, sweet goo but goo none-the-less.

Yeah, I remember the methods used by the Russian fur industry to "domesticate" the foxes they bred in an OU programme (back when such were available on TV).
Pretty extreme "Pavlovian" methods were used to "break" the foxes and make them totally dependent on their handlers, physically and emotionally - a kind of brainwashing/conditioning. Selective breeding them produced more amenable stock that you did not have to kill before you could handle it.

As far as I recall the breeders simply took the cubs that were the friendliest in each generation and simply bred from them.

In my memory, which might well be faulty, the video showed considerable harsh treatment, caging, beating etc. There might well be two strings to this story, the "industrial" and the "fashionable", even if the latter possibly grew out of the former. Better to give the fox a home than weair it I suppose!
How fascinating! I had no idea about this experiment. http://155.97.32.9/~bbenham/2510%20Spring%2009/Behavior%20Genetics/Farm-Fox%20Experiment.pdf is a detailed account of the experiment which I'm saving here to read later.
It is fascinating. In particular the domestication traits followed the embryo. They cross transplanted domesticated embryos into un-domesticated mothers and all the domesticated traits appeared in the offspring.
