I am currently studing at the University of Memphis(believe it or not that have one of the better History departments in the US). I have been to Rome several times as well as the rest of Italy I generally go once a year for "research".

That's a really cool choice for a PhD, are the "research" trips paid for by your school? :P

Na but because I do "research" I can write em off as a school expence. Although mostly I just eat my ass off and go to museums. Occasionally I'll assist or verify a translation(Latin) for one of the doctors I'm stuck under untill I graduate.

What got you to choose that subject for your PhD?

I like military history, mostly European medieval though. Like right now I've found a new guilty pleasure: have been watching the NatGeo show Knights of Mayhem (jousting) during the past two days.

Mostly I have always been into roman history, mostly the military side as rome is one of the few empires in history to go from a complete dominate powerhouse military wise to a conquered empire and rebuild only to be reconquered again. Not only that but most tactics used today were developed by the Romans or used against them in some fashion.

Well hi there! Welcome to the forum. ;D

Strange but not a stranger

I love my car more than I love most people.

Ah, a fellow Nihilist. Welcome to our meaningless corner of existence. This is as good a place as any to celebrate your insignificance! ;D. Here, have yourself a coke/beer/hookah, take a recliner and chill. Nice to have you aboard.

Now, tell us about how your journey through the quagmire of religion brought you here...

Not really much to tell truthfully. Just raised a roman catholic as I became an adult the belief fell to the wayside. As I studied history more and more I realized that morality is nothing more than a human construct with social, economical, or political benifets to those that follow them. And I began to notice a pattern that morality changes depending on who is in power at the time. Hence me becoming a moral nihilist.

I think most people are moral Nihilists in this forum (have a read through the various 'morality' threads here to see). Are you not an existential nihilist then? I'm disappointed.

Doesn't sound like your deconversion to Atheism was any great trauma. Shame, we like a good story about religious meanies we can wag our fingers at.

Fredrich Nietzsche couldnt resolve existential nihilism. Neither have I truthfully I dabble with it from time to time but it is not a all consuming passion of mine.
