Another prime example of sheltering and isolating religious people to mold them into 'better people'.

Short article:  http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Jewish-School-Crown-Heights-Delete-Facebook-Fine-144862755.html

Quote
An all-girls Jewish school in Brooklyn
says Facebook is immodest and
ordered 33 girls to delete their
Facebook accounts and pay a $100
fine.
The head administrator of the Beis
Rivkah High School in Crown Heights
told the Daily News the site is "not a
modest thing for a Jewish girl.''
Rabbi Benzoin Stock said the Hasidic
school has had a ban on the site for
several years. But as Facebook grew
more popular, all of its 495 students
were asked to sign a formal contract
not to use Facebook this year.
Last week, 33 students were found to
still be using Facebook.
Stock say they agreed to delete their
accounts and pay a $100 fine, which
will be returned at the end of the
school year.

Quote
An administrator defended the policy by
saying, "It's the wrong place for a Jewish girl
to be...Facebook is not a modest thing to
do."
Benzion Stock, another school
administrator, told The New York Post
that," Girls are getting killed on the Internet
— that's the reason for it."
He went on to say that:
"The Internet is a good way to ruin
marriages and families...we don't want them
there, period. It's the wrong place for a
Jewish girl to be. Facebook is not a modest
thing to do."
The policy came to light after administrators
found that several 11th grade girls had
joined Facebook. These girls were forced to
follow the policy, and pay the fine.
CrownHeights.info first reported the fines,
and the policy quickly went viral. School
officials were quick to advise that this policy
is not new, and is part of a contract the girls
must sign in order to attend the Orthodox
school. They stated that the girls all agreed
not to use social media.

It's totally to be expected given the culture these people have grown up in and live in.

I know it's to be expected, but why would someone do this to their own child?

Keeping a woman sheltered and docile doesnt make a better person. How the fuck does fb ruin marriages and 'modesty' ?

It just really pisses me off T__T these people are so backwards

The Chasidim in Brooklyn were also the ones who deleted images of Hillary Clinton and Audrey Tomason from that famous photo of the presidential cabinet watching Bin Laden get killed, because they refused to publish images of women. So bizarre that this happens in the US.

It boggles me, but i'm not entirely  surprised. There is an insane amount of sexism still here because of religious oppression. :(

Interesting linkage I was not aware of that.

I am so over FB.  But I still think this is creepy and wrong.  If their parents have a problem with them on FB, assuming they are minors and living at home, then their parents can deal with it.  I don't see how it's any of the schools business anyway.  I also think this school is doing these girls a disservice by trying to shield them from the reality of the world they live in.  While it may be true that girls can become prey on the internet, IMO the right thing to do is talk to them about safety and online predators, not just try to block out the fact that the internet exists.

This. If a school wants to block facebook on the school computers... OK. A lot of schools don't want students using social media at school, but the argument has nothing to do with modesty, it mostly has to do with FB being a waste of school time. It's a shame that this school couldn't just adopt a similar policy, and tell the girls that if they want to use it, use it at home but not at school. My 8th grade/11th grade cousins who are on facebook had this happen in their schools, and they use it at home, but they're only allowed to use it if they friend their parents and let their parents see what they're doing on FB. Reasonable enough, especially for the 8th grader, I guess.

These girls are in 11th grade, and are being told to delete their accounts!! Any sensible parent would let  their kids be parented at school.

Blocking on school computers is one thing, but to tell someone to delete it, wtf?

That has nothing to do with modesty.  It's gender bias and unreasonable b.s.

Personally, I think everyone should be forced to delete their Facebook accounts.

Soooo....can I assume someones heard the expression, "internet is the place where religions come to die"? ;)

And this kind of reminds me of a certain *coughtinfoilhatcough* guy in my class who refuses to make a FB acount because he heard from his cousin or whatever that the NSA (National Security Agency) is using it, and screens it for peoples personal information etc.  ???
