France shooting: Jewish school in Toulouse attacked

Children are reported to be among at least three people killed in a shooting outside a Jewish school in Toulouse, south-west France.

Witnesses told French media that one adult and two children were among the dead.

They said a man opened fire on people waiting at a school drop-off point and then fled on a motorbike.

It comes days after three soldiers were shot dead by a man on a motorbike in the same part of France.

A 30-year-old paratrooper was shot dead in a residential area of Toulouse just over a week ago, while two soldiers were killed and a third wounded as they used a cashpoint in the town of Montauban, some 29 miles (46km) away, on Thursday.

A correspondent at the scene for the French television network BFM said people in the area were linking the latest shootings to the attacks on the soldiers.

She said people were in "immense shock".

The BBC says the soldiers were "ethnic" - in France that's likely to mean Arabs or black Muslims.  So the link would be that the killer resents anything 'non-French'.

Unknown at this point, but speculation is rife. The military personal targeted are from a unit that has been deployed in Afghanistan. But ATM there is no firm evidence for motive.

Like... WHY? If someone had a war-like message to send, why didn't they go to like Afghanistan and wear explosive undies around a NATO-camp?

If they had a message to send about the situation in France, why didn't they go to like Afghanistan to live for half a year and see if their mind changed?

Raid on Toulouse shooting suspect

Police hunting a gunman suspected of killing seven people in southern France have surrounded a house in Toulouse.

The 24-year-old Frenchman from Toulouse has said he belongs to al-Qaeda, Interior Minister Claude Gueant said.

Police are now negotiating with the man, who said he acted in "revenge for Palestinian children" and French military operations abroad.

Two police officers were injured in exchanges of fire during the raid and the suspect's brother is under arrest.

The man's mother, who is Algerian, has been brought to the scene, but Mr Gueant said she had refused to become involved as "she had little influence on him".

The minister said the suspect had made several visits to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"He claims to be a mujahideen and to belong to al-Qaeda," Mr Gueant said.

"He wanted revenge for the Palestinian children and he also wanted to take revenge on the French army because of its foreign interventions."

Islam is a religion of peace for the vast majority of its adherents. But with around 1,000,000,000 followers 0.1% represents 1million nutters. That's an awful lot of nutters to give the other 99.9% a bad name.

Hmm I wonder what the French political reaction to this event will be. The burka is already banned and there is/was all the commotion about halal meat in the french presidential campaign just prior to the shootings taking place. I can imagine this is going to be a major campaign point for winning votes and maybe Le Penn might have a chance of getting in now (I hope not though).
