My wife and I took two of our grandchildren to the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville, TX, this past weekend.  I go there at least once every fall (it goes for 8 weeks in October and November), and also occasionally make it to the Scarborough Faire festival in Waxahachie, TX in the spring.  Does anyone else like to go to these festivals?  Lots of good Gypsy and Celtic music and dancing, along with good food, comedy acts, and shopping.  Add some fun rides and games, and you've got a very expensive family weekend.

I'm not sure why it's called "Renaissance", as it's much more medieval than Renaissance.  But it's lots of fun.

I've been to Scarborough Faire once with some friends.  I didn't go since then because I was laid off and it was too expensive but may go against this year with friends again.  I think I have some friends who dress up for it too; but they weren't with the group I went with.  I'm not against dressing up but am not into it enough to make or buy an outfit.

I have been to a couple of those, always a good time.

Yep, been to the Pennsylvania RenFaire a bunch. They can be a lot of fun. Live shows, outdoor activity, music, dancing, food and drink. What's not to like?

Then there's that giant turkey leg you get to carry around and eat like a caveman. It's not the best turkey leg in the world, but in that setting, it is delicious lol.

Yeah, what McQ says....plus thousands of people in costume. But, after having been a member of the SCA for several years in the past and gone to RenFest's since the early 80's, I'm rather bored with it all.

IMO,
the Michigan Renaissance Festival has the best food

Renfests have been taken over by the goth and fantasy groups which ruin the theme of a "Renaissance" festival.

Don Juan and Miguel are the best comedy act along with Ded Bob and Washing Well Wenches (the later two I haven't seen since I moved to Texas)

The essence of the mind is not in what it thinks, but how it thinks. Faith is the surrender of our mind; of reason and our skepticism to put all our trust or faith in someone or something that has no good evidence of itself. That is a sinister thing to me. Of all the supposed virtues, faith is not.

Don Juan and Miguel...love those guys!

We see lots of people come to PA dressed in all kinds of mixed costumes. Half Jedi, half goth dude. Some dressed just in the S&M gear. Looks like a porn convention strolled through the gates at times.

I was a paid cast member at PA for 3 years, and saw the most outrageous stuff!

I really like Tartanic. It's difficult to get better than a bunch of dudes wearing no pants playing bagpipes and beating on large drums... well, the dancing girls, but after that, not much better.
Always question all authorities because the authority you don't question is the most dangerous... except me, never question me.

Renfairs are a pretty decent waste of time.    The closest one we have is in Battle Creek, MI - and they have comedy routines, jousting, weapon demonstrations, and celtic musicians performing.      Mustn't forget the Dragons legs and King's mead!  (Turkey Leg and Root Beer....)   A big portion of these festivals are the market as well where you can go gift buying for your favorite geek!

Another attraction for those that enjoy this atmosphere is the Medival Times show - we went to the one in Orlando, FL and my boys loved it!   I know they also have other locations such as Chicago.

My wife and I love Tartanic - they put out a lot of energy with just bagpipes and drums.

They crack me up, and Don Juan can really make his whip crack, as well.  Enuf about whips and cracks.
