This is officially the last day of summer.  The BBC just said it has been the coolest summer since 1993, which seems about right.  But in my area it has also been very, very dry.

Bristol's been the same - April was sunny, then it's been cold wet and grey for the last four months  still, it's the same every year, we never get a summer. Thankfully my flat's on the market and when it sells I'm planning on heading south in a motorhome to spend the winter on a Portuguese beach

I don't understand this, I'm living 7° latitude below Lisbon and winter is cool/chilly.
Looking at here mean max temp for December is 14.8°C, that's cold.
And it seems to rain every second day.

Magic Pudding, I think you've just proven my point. I was thinking of wintering in the Algarve, but where I live in Bristol it rains at least every second day pretty much all year round, and 14.8 degrees isn't unusual on a July or August afternoon (although it would be below average). It would be the average temperature in mid-May not mid-December, and the English weather forecasters would call that a nice warm late spring / early summer's afternoon and not 'cool or cold or chilly'. If I can get that kind of weather in January I'll be very very happy!

What heatwave? This is just a slightly warmer summer....   Anyhow, a good a/c unit, lots of water and lots of cursing. My friends had their second annual redneck pool party the other day. Let me describe this for you. Take one pickup truck. Line bed with two tarps. Fill with hose water. Add ice chest full of coors lite. Gather all your friends in cut offs/wife beaters/tan lines etc.   BAM! Redneck pool party!
