Are you an atheist?  Do you want to have civil debates with some traditionally orientated Catholics?

I'm there but I don't really post much.  I'm not that passionate.  But they're interested in having civil discussions with non-Catholics to spice things up.  So it's a good place to go if you're interested in talking with non-trollish Christians, some of whome are former atheists, who are thoughtful and fun, you should check it out.

No thanks. I might have been interested about two years ago, but now? Nah.

The people at Phatmass are cool, but it's a forum that drains me even though I feel compelled to post there.

It can be difficult to walk the line between respecting the person but telling them what I think about their beliefs.

Very true.  I told them I'd post a recruiting thing here because they asked me why I didn't post more (I think they're bored).  Aside from not really giving a fuck, I'm internet friends with a lot of the people there and it can be tricky to walk that line.

You said some time ago that you considered yourself to be a cultural christian...in what way exactly? Just for the community?

No.  I actually don't associate with the Newman center on campus and don't have a lot of Catholic friends anymore.  I was raised in a fairly devout Catholic family and planned for years to enter a monastary after college.  So Catholicism formed a huge part of my identity for a long time and still does.  It's something familiar to me.  I still read scripture to relax and often reflexively look at problems from a Catholic point of view.  I guess it's kind of like a lot of Eastern Europeans who don't go to Church or have any real, solid faith but the national Church still forms a huge part of their identity or Muslims who never pray but still get pissed when somebody mockes Muhammad.  It's why I don't really feel right in identifying myself as an atheist.  I am in the sense that I have no active faith in God or an afterlife but I'm not in that I don't identify with the whole culture that seems to surround contemporary atheism.

I just woke up from a nap, so if that makes so sense please let me know.

Makes sense, though I never met someone who described themselves like that. Interesting. :)

My husband and I have a friend who is catholic atheist....apparently it is not that uncommon since tradition is apparently pushed in catholicism just as much as it is in judaism (jews tend to continue to identify as such even after they switch religions or lose faith...ie "jews for jesus").

I was a bit of a "cultural catholic" for a while. My husband and I got married in a catholic church, for instance, even though neither of us had any belief in churchy stuff anymore.

Could you define your perception of this "culture"?
