Army Launches New DADT Repeal Site

QuoteJune 07, 2011
Army News Service|by Sharonda Pearson

WASHINGTON -- In preparation of the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, the Army has launched a new website to provide servicemembers and their families the most up-to-date information about the change.

The website features current news articles, key facts, frequently asked questions and additional resources. It is just one of the many training resources the Army implemented to educate the force and minimize misconceptions about the repeal.

"It's a way for the Army to provide the latest and greatest information about the repeal to Soldiers, family members and the public," said Lt. Col Timothy M. Beninato, public affairs advisor to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs and Army G-1...

Sounds like a good idea to effectively communicate this significant change.

Now they need to deal with the abundance of rapes.

Rapes? Dunno, I was in 14 years and never saw anybody raped.

I doubt they are raping everyone up in there... I couldn't help myself. I saw several stories and one video about rapes in the military, both male on male and male on female. In no way am I implying everyone in the military is a rapist or has been raped, simply that there seems to be a problem that is being ignored.

I think most of the assaults happened during training and the superiors did nothing about it. If you are really interested I will try and find the information again.

In hindsight, perhaps "abundance" wasn't the best choice of words.

That has and perhaps occasionally still does, unfortunately.  However, the military has made a lot of changes in how it deals with sexual assault.  While nothing will stop it completely, there have been great strides made.  We now allow victims to make a restricted report.  If they go to a sexual assault coordinator, chaplain, or medical professional, they can get a rape kit taken to preserve evidence and get medical treatment without being forced to report it to authorities for investigation.  This allows victims to be treated without the fears that often come along with reporting a rape.  Later, if they find the courage to report it, they can, and the evidence is already there.  There is recurring education not only on violent rape, but also on the most common type of rape, "date rape."  We have bystander training which teaches us to watch out for our fellow service members and see a situation developing (guy trying to get girl unconscious drunk and take her home) and stop it before it gets too far.

For DADT, my unit has received the new training.  It was professionally done without joking around.  They made it very clear what behavior would be unacceptable, and how we would be treating all service members equally, which means no separate quarters or showers for homosexuals.  I was very happy to see how the military is handling this.  While there will be adjustments and growing pains, I don't think it'll be as bad as some at Fox News would have you believe.

Good to know, as for what fox is saying about all this, I've been boycotting the national news outlets for a couple weeks now. I need to take breaks because they usually piss me off.
